I've had the D-200 for a year and a half. I don't know how it will help you to get better pictures. It's a large, heavy and obtrusive piece of equipment (I repeat: L A R G E) and if you ask me not the best choice for night shoots the way you do them. Also, it has more noise then Canon at high ISOs. If you decide to get it, make sure you get a VR lens, it will give you 2-3 stops more exposure.
Seriously, megapixels don't mean anything unless you're planning to make print-outs of your portraits (web = 72 pixels per inch). Please aks a pro before spending your money on seductive gear... get a smaller camera, point and shoot. The D-200 has more settings you could possibly explore in a lifetime.

Luke you would be better off getting the 18-200 VR lens with a cheaper camera like a D40 or D80. The lense is more important than the camera body in determining picture quality. Hell your D100 is just fine as it is.

Luke, listen to Morbid and Vanessa on this one. No need for getting fancy. Trust. Less is more.

Is VR the Nikon equivalent of Canon's L-series glass? If so I concur with the recommendations...whenever you're wondering where to invest the bulk of your dollars in a new camera setup. heed the words of Sir Mix-A-Lot and 'Put 'Em On The Glass'!

It's nice camera Luke, but you should have gotten the Pentax with rebate(s) as I suggested. It would have been nearly 1/2 the price. Also, not sure you really need 10 MP. Are you planning on creating posters anytime soon? Higher MP in that range can result in significantly more noise and of course substantially larger files that will slow down your work flow. For posting pictures on the web as you do, 6.1 MP is more than sufficient.
The extended warranty was a smart purchase.

That is not a particularly big or heavy setup. He'll get used to it quickly. I often use a Canon 1D 70-200mm combo that is twice as big and heavy as that.
He'll be using flash and high ISO is not a factor. Use a shoe flash and low ISO indoors.
Likewise a stabilized lens is not an advantage in terms of ISO, probably not at all for him (it's better to use faster exposures to freeze camera motion since VR can only handle some kinds of motion).
An SLR has the huge advantage of being fast. P&S should be called point & wait, wait, wait & shoot. Especially in the poor lighting he will almost always have a P&S is likely to autofocus so slowly the shot will be gone by the time it shoots, if it can autofocus at all.
(does the D-200 have a focus assist lamp? If not a shoe flash is probably mandatory)
Yes this thread is probably in the wrong forum, but getting Luke set up to produce more Cage material is important!

10.2 Megapixel's! Shit Luke, you're going to have to be more selective as to the skanks you shoot on the red carpet. Don't need to get too sharp an image with the camera of death. Our eyes are hurting as it is.
Too sharp an image relies on the ability to focus properly.

Did you bother to purchase an external flash at all? Some accessorites go along way.
Who kicked sand in your face anyway?
Laeh has all kinds of problems keeping her hands off of other's equipment.

It's a very nice camera, it has a professional and sturdy feel to it, with a metal body inside instead of just plastic. It also looks professional, and people always think that you know what you are doing. The shutter makes a loud, impressive noise to underscore that quality. If you're looking for more respect from your subjects, you got it.
The build-in focus assist lamp is blinding which can cause uncomfortable squinting expressions for several seconds. I guess that could be a bonus for xpt... but hopefully he will be using an external flash unit.

No. Whores with gaping mouths, meeth, and bad poses will still be whores with gaping mouths, meeth, and bad poses. It's like buying a 1080i 60-inch plasma TV just to watch old episodes of WKRP in Cincinatti.
