Anything the government does, the private sector could do more efficiently and for less money. The problem is since we can't seem to keep our politicians from engaging in nepotism, cronyism, and pay for play (this is both sides of the aisle here) the private sector companies often contracted by the government aren't scrutinized as diligently as they need to be, which leads to waste, fraud, and abuse. Not to mention the sheer size of the federal government makes watchdogging private companies, working for the government, as well as the more obscure bureaucracies, like the GSA (general services administration), nearly an impossible task. Smaller more simply organized government bureaucracy and a great deal more transparency could solve a lot of these problems.
