If you are not used to smoking what you want to do is either get a pip lighter that lights towards the side. Zippo makes ones that light towards the side. And you want to char the tobacco once then you want to light it.

It's ours if you want it, I have been sending off my pipes to friends because I don't think I like tobacco despite the fact that it smells nice and it's a bitch magnet.
