Just between you and me and my brother Snuffy, I think she was the equivilant of a teenage dope dealer in the ghetto. Once she realized she could make more in a day doing this than she could at the Gap (or wherever young people found jobs in those days), she was off to the races, doing whatever it took to keep up the masquerade. Until it became in her best interests to drop the mask. She was a very shrewd businesslass.
