I hate remakes but I just watched True Grit(2010) and it is probably the best remake of a classic film I have ever seen. The writers/directors/actors didn't try to over take the classic movie, it came across more of an homage to the original film. I can even go so far as to say I liked the way the end was handled in the modern version better than the original. It worked for me since the rest of the film stayed so true to the classic in it presentation.
