Not always. The first two that come to mind are both horror movies but the remakes are far better then the originals:
The Blob and John Carpenter's The Thing.
But by and large, yes, most remakes suck.

The original Stepford Wives was creepy and suspenseful. The Kidman version was horrible. I couldn't believe they tried to make a comedy out of it. That's like trying to redo Rosemary's Baby as a musical.

I didnt see the remake of the Blob I saw the original. A really really bad one off the top of my head is Planet of the Apes.....You dont mess with pure fabulousness. Rosemary's Baby is one of my all time faves and the 1st Stepfords was awesome, the 2nd one was fuking plain awful, I really dont like remakes, but I do want to see Halloween by Zombie.
