The ring is representative of a bond. Once that bond is over, the ring is returned.
You seem to be mixing issues ... you said she should keep the ring because it was "fabulous" and that you would. There was no hint in your response of him not providing for his children or her selling it to provide for her kids.
If he owes money for the kids, she can take him to court to get him to take is responsibilities. But, it is more likely that, as the money earner, she likely would owe him in a divorce.
