One of the textbook is a special college edition that costs $180.00 in the college bookstore, but by buying a used standard edition online, I only paid $42.00 for it and it comes with more pages. Thus, by paying less I get more.

This strategy goes off the rails if there is material in the special college edition that gets assigned that isn't in your cheaper standard version.

Nah, its the same stuff, just less pages. I checked. They write "Special College Edition" and trim the pages and spike the price, but that's the classic marketing trick: "Special Edition".
