I don't know how you people can listen to some of this stuff. I dated a Jewish girl named Carolyn about 10 years ago who ran a fanzine in Cleveland and she was deep into this really dark glowering noise in which the singers growled all the lyrics. A real studied growl. I asked her if it was special effects and she said it was a naked voice. Fucking monotonous and stupid. She liked this one band called Cannibal Corpse whose songs had titles like 'Fuck Her With Your Knife'. I asked Carolyn "Is it a joke? You know, like Doctor Hook or Captain Beefheart or whatever?" and she said something to the effect that these fellows were in earnest and told me that my question was insulting.
