Vornado table fan 5303. It was the last fan on the shelves at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. All the other stores in my area are sold out of fans. Home Depot, Costco, OSH, Target, even little TrueValue mom and pops are sold out of anything beyond tiny desk fans. Costco had one location with fans in stock, but it was a Costco business center and it was about 90 minutes from my home.

Heat wave. I live in Santa Monica, which has almost no air conditioning in rental units and many houses. There have only been about 3 or 4 days per year that anyone would really need AC. That all changed in the past year or two.
We don't have Big Lots. We don't have a lot of national chains that are perceived as low cost because we are perceived as a high income area. No Walmart, Target, CiCi's, Chuckee Cheese, etc. There is a Target out in the Valley but I don't go to the valley unless there is a paycheck involved, especially during a heat wave!

Gotcha. I was going to correct the Big Lots suggestion anyway. Any time you go there looking for something specific they won't have it. When you go looking for extra virgin olive oil they won't have a single bottle but they will have 32gb sandisk microsd cards for $4. When you want a sd card the olive oil will be 1.00/litre. best thing I ever did there was jump on a rival vacuum sealer for 32.99 when I didn't even forsee a need for one. Oh yeah and another time I went to get something else they do always have (cheap bleach) with intentions of going to Lowes or HD next to buy a dehumidifier and they had three of them for 100.00/ea. Same unit was over 200.00 at the other stores.

Hankook studded snow tires for my car. Bought them yesterday and had to drop off the car this morning. The sales dude said to be there before 8am and sure enough at 7:45am when they started letting people in, there were already about 60 people ahead of me waiting outside in line. The first person in line had been there since 5:45am. They only could service 66 cars today, so anyone who got there after 8 was going to have to come back Monday. It was like waiting in line for concert tickets.

I bought three riding mowers for 100.00 from an older guy off craigslist. All three run, but all three need a little attention. I rarely need a rider but now I can leave them wherever I'll use them.
He is an interesting character, as I suspected he would be based on our email exchange. He would have tinkered with and fixed them and sold them for more money, but was having his shoulder operated on and they dropped him on his head moving him off the operating table. This caused him to loose control of the outer three fingers on both hands and left him with 8 bulging discs in his upper spine. I really feel for the guy because you could tell he'd always been a fighter. He is having trouble getting a surgeon to take his case to fix him up because they know he is sitting on a malpractice goldmine. I suspect he'll be buying whatever damned mower his heart desires when his settlement comes through.
I have now repaired and cut grass with all three of these mowers. The Honda has to be straight wired to start and if I want to invest the extra 30 minutes I can disable whatever safety sensor is keeping it from starting normally. The 14 horse Craftsman is a beast, and the 12 horse Murray is as big a piece of shit as it was from the start. I had to buy two batteries, a tire and a mandrel/belt kit so I am invested 275.00 in three mowers. I'm going to sell two of them, I think, to cover the total cost. Maybe just one so I can leave one at a rental property.
I would have thought you alaskans would have a set mounted in your shed ready to change out yourself.
This is a new car. I usually get a dedicated winter wheel/tire package from TireRack and do the changeovers myself, but they didn't have anything besides "performance" winter tires in the size I wanted, so I just got wheels from them and bought the snow tires at a local shop. Before this, I hadn't been to tire shop for a changeover in over 15 years. I had forgotten how crazy busy those places are this time of the year. They must love/hate it.

The quadcopter came today. Its a "Micro Drone 2.0" I bought through stacksocial.com. It shoots pretty good video for it's price, considering pilot error. The quad flies a lot like a helicopter but has another axis to contend with compared to the toy helicopters I have.
I'm going to buy a bigger, better model to carry my gopro once I can fly this one competently. I can use them to look at roofs, film jobsites and enough other stuff to justify writing off their expense to business.

I worked for a guy like that once. Pre-quadcopter of course. He drove a non-descript Oldsmobile and he'd park on a ridge for a while with binoculars, then he'd pull up on the jobsites and give those guys hell. I did not follow his lead.
However, today the quad flights were much better. In a week or so I'll be ready to buy a better model. I will definitely expense it to my business and will definitely get use out of it for communicating to clients. One job in particular, it will pay for itself.

I had a friend who was a general contractor. He used to underbid jobs on the mainline if the homeowner would agree to let him keep materials from the demolition. Alot of times he even charged them to dispose of it. He'd tear down old carriage houses, guest houses, barns and garages and keep the old wood timber then mill it and sell it at a premium on other jobs for wood flooring or paneling. He made some big money doing that.

I should have a new iPad Air 2 right now since I ordered one the day they became available for pre-ordering. Unfortunately, FedEx appears to have lost my package. I was emailed a tracking number from Apple saying it shipped on the 23rd and was due to arrive yesterday, but the delivery process has been stuck at the first stage, "Shipping label has been created," for 5 days now.
I don't know if anyone here has ever tried to call FedEx about a package, but it was a 2 hour process the last time I tried. I used to have a direct number to the local FedEx warehouse counter and someone would always answer, but they (of course) changed that number. So, I called the Apple Store's 800 number and they're on the case, but said it could take 3 days for FedEx to get back to them. So my iPad is stuck in limbo.

I asked my mom if she wanted a newer iPad, since hers is 1st generation and doesn't have a camera, and she said no. I was very happy. No clue if the battery life has gone to shit, because she keeps it plugged in most of the time.
