Several of the bigger brands are this way. The split happened when the cigar industry was nationalized after the Revolution. A lot of owners were labeled "enemies of the People" and bailed the Worker's Paradise before they ended up facing a firing squad. I got 'em all back through Customs. At the shop owners suggestion I took them out of the tubes and took the bands off of them but honestly, I just think they were tired at the airport tonight. What's the difference gap between an expensive american cigar and a cuban, quality wise? I never, ever got the appeal of cigars. My old friends and I used to bust out the black and milds every now and then, and those were ok, but all they really did was make the lips sweet. Describe the cuban experience, Bornyo. I just don't get how rolling smoke around in your mouf can go up significantly in quality.

I don't particularly enjoy smoking cigars, unless I can do it out of doors and with a good glass of Bourbon in my hand. They just go together.

And I'm not positive Cubans are significantly better other than how hard they are to get hold of in the US. However, aficionados worldwide acknowledge their superiority so I will defer to them. They say the Cuban climate and soil combines to grow the best tobacco. For me, these have a smoothness, or lack of "bite" that even the best Dominicans seem to have. (Dominicans are probably considered 2nd to Cubans overall- again, for the climate and soil)

So it's like the difference between a California and Italian wine.

I bring Cubans back every time I fly to Greece. I buy them at the Duty Free shop in Athens and then stuff them into my cargo shorts. Because unless you look like a big-time druggie, you aren't getting a pat down by customs. Actually, the last time I came back I caught more shit about the musical instrument than anything. It was a Greek-style mandolin called a bouzouki and they were worried that it had ivory on it. I guess importing/exporting ivory to Alaska is a big no-no because of the trade of walrus tusks, etc.

Hard to say how those trademarks will pan out.

It's much the same with the Rum industry. Bacardi and the Cuban Gov't are battling it out over the trademark to Havana Club, amongst others.

Money is pouring into that country and they are getting a handle on security and promotion. The sooner they absorb Haiti the better as Haiti is really holding that island down.
