GM announced yesterday that it would phase out the Pontiac brand/division by the end of 2010 and focus on four core brands in the U.S: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC.
Damn no more Firebird Trans Ams EVER!

Your ridiculous pension demands and extortion bargaining tactics are only sustainable for teacher or government worker unions. Taxpayers can be to forced to pay more under threat of prison, but consumers can't be forced to buy certain car brands (at least until socialist Obama nationalizes the entire industry).

The auto unions did milk it as much as possible. The health plan they had was ridiculously outlandish - no deductables, lavish dental work, this stuff went on for years - and don't even mention the jobs bank fiasco. They got away with it because there always was healthy economy to prop up sales.
Of course when I see Rick Wagoner flying into Washington DC on his private jet with no decent reorganization plan, I can't blame the unions for playing hardball.
Damn shame about Pontiac though, ballsy cars over the years (except for the piece of junk Fiero).

Really? Buick is considered a top quality brand. It has beat Toyota on dependability studies. They built factories in China and last time I was there, maybe in 03, they were selling the Century under the name Buick Shanghai, the Chinese were buying them up then.

On a side note: The mentions of China reminded me of an article I read months ago that stated the Chinese are drooling over a potential GM bankrupcy. They want into the market and would love to cherry pick GM at pennies on the dollar.

Technically, my first car was a Pontiac Firebird. My parents wouldn't let me get a car, so my boyfriend bought me a red Firebird for my 16th birthday. It wasn't me at all. I wanted my friend's old black Karmen Ghia she was selling for $3K. My parents made me tell my bf I wouldn't be accepting his gift. He ended up keeping it until he wrecked it.

My first car was a 5.0. It got stolen and I replaced it with a Formula Firebird. As much as I love the car I drive now I still have dreams about driving that Firebird(*cue Kid Rock..{All Summer Long}.
Anyways... GM is a redundant cluster fuck.They have way too many products that are the same fighting for market space against each other built on different production lines.

My Girl Is A Nosy Bitch, Tatty, Spunko - Not going to take the time to respond to your posts individually because this is a subject that just pisses me the fuck off on a personal level, and I'm not on the board to get pissed off, but I respect your opinions even though I don't necessarily agree with them.
I buy things made in other countries all the time. A LOT of things bought in America every day are made in other countries. But a vehicle is the biggest purchase a person can make other than real estate and I just personally think that you should support your own team when you do it...and one of the things that pisses me off more than anything are right-wing flag wavers and left-wing "let's help everyone" types that drive foreign fucking cars. End of story.

I hear ya Vizz... Almost everyone I've talked to about it today is in shock. And when I say "almost everyone" I mean people that somewhat have a fucken clue.
On the flipside... And not to hurt feelings, neither GM or Ford offered a product comparable to mine based on my needs for like 7 years. I leave Chrysler out of it because that was a shit product forever. I'd actually prefer to see Chrysler go tits up but that's just me.

I respect that, Viz. I also think that a company counting on patriotism/loyalty while shorting the very people that put them on top is unconscionable.
Have you read Sonny Barger's autobiogrpahy? He gets into this very subject when he discusses Harley-Davidson. Here's hoping the people working at Pontiac don't land too hard....

I meant: Is there a distinctly Canadian car campany or was there one ever? I do not mean manufacturing for other North American companies.
So has there ever been a Canadian car maker? I am not a very good Canadian but I assume that most of our innovations would be in long distance shipping like trains or boats.
I was mostly wondering if Canadians felt any nationalistic pride in a Canadian car company.
I looked it up and all sorts of European, Asian and US cars have been assembled here. But is there or has there ever been a Canadian car company?

Total carnage / fallout from this was estimated around 21,000 jobs, I think? 
I own a Toyota Yaris for commuter & long distance travel (gas mileage) and I have a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited w/ 5.7L Hemi. I don't really fall for the "me love domestic auto long time" bullshit, I'm more concerned with where that money is going. At least Toyota (and Honda?) are keeping things at bay, and don't seem to be getting their ass handed to them after years of shitty business decisions.
