199 Reasons Why Ronald Reagan Stunk
by davefromqueens
Tue May 15, 2007 at 08:02:10 AM PST

Ronald Reagan was the second worst President in American history. Instead of dealing with the facts and adverse consequences of Reagan's presidency, conservatives have engaged in a multi-billion dollar propaganda campaign to lionize Ronald Reagan.

The right wing propaganda strategy is simple. Lionize Reagan, (legacy, reaganesque) create a Teflon persona, try to immunize Reagan from criticism, and then attempt to validate RW conservatism through Reagan. They do this because RW conservatism, the ideology, has been, is, and always will be an utter failure.

But it's time we obliterate the Ronald Reagan myths and point out the real record. It's time we automatically use phrases like disaster, terrorist coddler, middle class tax increaser, pessimist, and failure to aptly describe Mr. 666 himself, Ronald Wilson Reagan. Considering his real record, these phrases are understatements.

Reagan left office on January 20, 1989. The Berlin Wall fell in November, 1989 and the Soviet Union ceased to exist by the end of 1991. Hardly "long after Reagan left office". Now I'm not a republican and have never voted for one but if the rest of those reasons are as suspect as number one then it's no surprise why this country is so polarized.

At least 170 of those had better have some kind of source provided before I believe any of them. I'm willing to bet 85% of these reasons are the writer's opinion and/or how he has interpreted various statistics and not verified facts.

Quote:

38. Star Wars. As Mitterand once said, "What planet is he living on?"

Who gives a fuck what the French think? They thought the Marginot Line was a perfect defense system too.

Quote:

54. Bribes, kickbacks, and pay for play were the norm of this corrupt administration.

As opposed to the "campaign donations" people gave the Clintons so they could sleep in the Lincoln bedroom?
Quote:

60. Reagan fired all the air traffic comptrollers thus weakening air safety.

You mean the air traffic controllers that went on strike illegally thus weakening air safety.
Quote:

67. Unemployment hit double digits under Ronald Reagan.

Due to inflation hitting double digits at the end of Carter's term.

Quote:

72. Reagan's policies put small farmers out of work, allowing agri-business conglomerates to monopolize the industry.

Both my father and my brother had family farms in the 80s. Neither were put out of work. My father had his until he died and now my brother farms both.
Quote:

74. Reagan supported NAFTA.

So did Clinton.

Quote:

82. Reagan began his campaign for presidency in Philadelphia, Mississippi, preaching the same rhetoric as the murderers who killed 3 civil right workers (Schwerned, Goodman, Cheney) in 1963.

I really have no idea where Reagan started his campaign or what he said but I know that this is bullshit.

Quote:

94. Reagan supported the ayatollahs of Iran.

Bullshit, the ayatollahs were scared shitless of Reagan. Why do you think we got our hostages back the minute he took office? Besides how is giving the country the ayatollahs were at war with weapons equate to supporting the ayatollahs?
Quote:

110. Reagan supported the brutal murderous regime of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia.

I believe here the author has confused Reagan with Noam Chomsky who maintained that the Khmer Rouge never happened well into the 1980s.
Quote:

121. Reagan's embrace of Barry Goldwater's extremist platform in 1964.

Courtesy of Wikipedia

"Goldwater viewed abortion as a matter of personal choice, not intended for government intervention."

"In response to Moral Majority founder Jerry Falwell's opposition to the nomination of Sandra Day O'Connor to the Supreme Court, of which Falwell had said, 'Every good Christian should be concerned,' Goldwater retorted: 'I think every good Christian ought to kick Falwell right in the ass.' 17] "

"in 1981, gave a speech on how he was angry about the bullying of American politicians by religious organizations, and would 'fight them every step of the way'."

Goldwater also supported gays in the military. If Goldwater was an extremist so is every single candidate running for the Democratic nomination.

Quote:

128. If you add up all the murderous regimes Reagan supported and tabulated the death tolls, Reagan would rank as one of the world's five biggest murders, slightly behind Hitler and Stalin.

Hitler and Stalin did their work on their own. No one includes all the other leaders they "supported" when figuring their murder statistics. Hitler supported Tojo but no one includes the casualties of Pearl Harbor on Hitler's resume. I can only conclude that to this writer "supporting" means recognize as the leader of their country. Stalin recognized Mao, Batista and numerous other Communist dictatorships but he does not get the credit for the atrocities they committed. This is a complete double standard this writer is holding Reagan to here and frankly his faulty use of logic here is enough to question the credibility of his other claims.
Quote:

139. Reagan tried to undo Title Nine and equal education laws.

Title IX is a sham and should be undone, same with affirmative action.

Quote:

162. The number of business failures in Reagan's first term tripled the number of business failures during Carter's presidency.

Because the effects of Carter's economic policies did not hit home until the early 1980s. Unless this writer is willing to admit that the stock market growth early in W's term had nothing to do with Clinton's policies. I'm willing to bet I will see John Madden flying a 747 before that happens.

Quote:

165. The events surrounding Pan Am flight 103.

Like bombing Quadafi's palace. Notice how Libya has pretty much stayed out of the international terrorism business since then. Also another reason to ignore Mitterwald, since the cheese eating fuckwad wouldn't let us use their airspace.

Quote:

69. As Governor, Reagan ordered California state patrol onto a campus where a 25 year old man from San Jose was murdered by an overzealous officer.

As president Bill Clinton allowed the FBI to burn down the Branch Davidian complex killing 17 children under the age of 12.

Quote:

179. Reagan was the first divorced president in American history.

He's really reaching here. Any freshman debate student would decapitate him if he tried to use this to support a position on Reagan's presidential legacy.

Quote:

185. Reagan admitted to falling asleep during Cabinet meetings.

His cabinet had Casper Weinberger and James Watt in it. Who could stay awake listening to a conversation between those two?

I imagine we will see a similar historical whitewash rewrite on GWB for the next generation of misinformed zealots.
The next generation will see W as the savior of New Orleans and the one man who took down "International Terrarism" and they
will likey still be talking about Clinton's blowjob.

President Clinton announces another record budget surplus

From CNN White House Correspondent Kelly Wallace

September 27, 2000
Web posted at: 4:51 p.m. EDT (2051 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Clinton announced Wednesday that the federal budget surplus for fiscal year 2000 amounted to at least $230 billion, making it the largest in U.S. history and topping last year's record surplus of $122.7 billion.

"Eight years ago, our future was at risk," Clinton said Wednesday morning. "Economic growth was low, unemployment was high, interest rates were high, the federal debt had quadrupled in the previous 12 years. When Vice President Gore and I took office, the budget deficit was $290 billion, and it was projected this year the budget deficit would be $455 billion."

President Clinton announces that the federal budget surplus for fiscal year 2000 is the largest in U.S. history

Instead, the president explained, the $5.7 trillion national debt has been reduced by $360 billion in the last three years -- $223 billion this year alone.

This represents, Clinton said, "the largest one-year debt reduction in the history of the United States."

"Like our Olympic athletes in Sydney, the American people are breaking all kinds of records these days. This is the first year we've balanced the budget without using the Medicare trust fund since Medicare was created in 1965. I think we should follow Al Gore's advice and lock those trust funds away for the future," he said.

In June, the administration predicted the surplus would be $211 billion, and would increase by as much as $1 trillion over the next 10 years.

"The key to fiscal discipline is maintaining these results year after year. We need to put our priorities in order," Clinton said.

The president's news comes as lawmakers on Capitol Hill continue to wrestle with the fiscal year 2001 budget numbers. The new budget year begins October 1, and work has been completed on only two of the 13 annual spending bills, as the Republican-led Congress and the White House remain at odds over spending allocations.

"I am concerned, frankly, about the size and last-minute nature of this year's congressional spending spree, where they seem to be loading up the spending bills with special projects for special interests, but can't seem to find the time to raise the minimum wage, or pass a patients' bill of rights, or drug benefits for our seniors through Medicare, or tax cuts for long-term care, child care, or college education," Clinton said.

"These are the things that need to be done and I certainly hope they will be and still make the right investments and the right amount of tax cuts," Clinton said.

Rep. J.C. Watts, R-Oklahoma, chairman of the House Republican Conference, said the GOP wants 90 percent of the surplus used for the debt. In a CNN interview, he said the other 10 percent should be used to "take care of a lot of priorities we have, like prescription drugs, making sure that our education needs are met, making sure some of our national security needs are met, and doing that while at the same time protecting the Social Security surplus and the Medicare surplus."

That approach would be in lieu of tax cuts, which "we can't do this year because the president vetoed it," Watts said.

Clinton unveiled the new numbers in a statement at the White House before departing for fund-raising events in Dallas and Houston.

"This is part of our fiscal discipline to reduce the debt with the federal surplus," said one White House official who asked not to be identified. Reducing the debt, the official said, has "real effects for real Americans." It means lower interest rates for mortgages, car loans and college loans, and leads to an increase in investment and more jobs."

It is the third year in a row the federal government has taken in more than it spent, and has paid down the debt. The last time the U.S. government had a third consecutive year of national debt reduction was 1949, said the official.

The federal budget surplus for fiscal year 1999 was $122.7 billion, and $69.2 billion for fiscal year 1998. Those back-to-back surpluses, the first since 1957, allowed the Treasury to pay down $138 billion in national debt."

Iran did that to stick it to Carter one last time. They hated Carter for taking in the Shah more than they feared Reagan. Also, recall that Iran/Contra arms-for-hostages (different hostages) hoopla. I think that this is what is being referred to here.

And there's plenty of debate about the Philadelphia speech.

Here's one synopsis:

"Most egregious of all was Reagan's first speech after the 1980 convention, in Philadelphia, Mississippi. It was in Philadelphia that, just sixteen years earlier, the young civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner had been murdered by local Klansmen, but Reagan's speech failed to make even the slightest reference to the murders. Instead, it contained the usual code words--"I believe in states' rights and I believe in people doing as much as they can for themselves at the community level and at the private level.""

"List of Reagan administration convictions.
by lorelynn
Mon Oct 17, 2005 at 04:41:33 PM PST
Challenged by a conservative to present evidence that Reagan ran the most corrupt administration of the 20th century, I assembled this list of [21] convicts from Reagan's ranks.

If anybody can provide additional info, it would be appreciated. I do know there were many others convicted, but I'd like to keep it to people who were actually employed by the administration, and to crimes that were actually related to the office they served. I've never been able to find a good list online anywhere, and so I assembled this hoping to provide a resource for others as well. As far as I know, Nixon only had eight staffers convicted of crimes against their office. Clinton, of course, only had one."

Oh my God he wants local and city governments to solve local and city problems!! Stone the heretic. Is there some ordinance that requires a speaker to mention all famous murders that occur in the town they are speaking in? Is there anyone living in Dallas today that does not know that JFK was killed there? By using this clown's standards anyone that makes a speech in Memphis without mentioning MLK is a racist.

The one positive outcome from Clinton was his economic policy in dealing with the .com bubble. He seems to have realized what he had by '95 or so and not only managed to avoid screwing it up but kept it going as long as possible. This isn't criticism - most politicians would have screwed it up but he kept to the sidelines removing impediments (for example he stopped illegal immigration enforcement after employment effectively reached 100%). Avoiding the temptation to "improve" things is no small feat.

I lived though the 1970s and 1980s and Reagan was better than anyone from Nixon on. The blog (and some of gunker's posts) are a little baffling - some events happened under other presidents? And the S&L crisis of the 1980s was blamed on (Democratic) Congress at the time, not Reagan, due to congressional meddling in regulatory efforts in return for bribes, er, campaign donations?

PS. Clinton's problem with the history books is going to be that there really wasn't much going on in the country or world that he had a hand in - nothing to so much as warrant a paragraph in history books 50 years from now. At least Carter had Camp David.

85. Teenage pregnancy rates went up during the 1980s.

My Fav Regan Sec of Whatever.......

Sect of State-

Alexander Meigs Haig, Jr

"I'm in control here"

Secretary of State Alexander Haig speaks to the press about the attempted assassination on President Ronald Reagan In 1981, after the March 30 assassination attempt on Reagan, Haig asserted before reporters "I'm in control here" as a result of Reagan's hospitalization. Rather than being seen as an attempt to allay the nation's fear, the quotation became seen as an attempt by Haig to exceed his authority.[citation needed]

“ Constitutionally, gentlemen, you have the President, the Vice President and the Secretary of State in that order, and should the President decide he wants to transfer the helm to the Vice President, he will do so. He has not done that. As of now, I am in control here, in the White House, pending return of the Vice President and in close touch with him. If something came up, I would check with him, of course. ”
——Alexander Haig, Alexander Haig, autobiographical profile in TIME Magazine, April 2, 1984

Haig was incorrect in his interpretation of the U.S. Constitution concerning both the presidential line of succession and the 25th Amendment, which dictates what happens when a president is incapacitated. But the holders of the two offices between the Vice President and the Secretary of State, the Speaker of the House (at the time, Tip O'Neill) and the President pro tempore of the Senate (at the time, J. Strom Thurmond), would be required under U.S. law (3 U.S.C. 19) to resign their positions in order for either of them to become acting President. This was an unlikely event considering that Vice-President Bush was merely not immediately available. Haig's statement therefore reflected political reality, if not necessarily legal reality. Haig later said,

“ I wasn’t talking about transition. I was talking about the executive branch, who is running the government. That was the question asked. It was not, 'Who is in line should the President die?' ”
—— Alexander Haig, Alexander Haig interview with 60 Minutes II April 23, 2001

In all fairness to Haig, it wasn't his interpretation of the Constitution but the law of succession which is Congressional law. Among the tasks the Constitution assigns to Congress is the determination of the order of succession.

While the 25th amendment designates the Vice President as the successor to the President in case of death, etc., it assigns the ordering after the VP to Congress.

There have been 3 major acts by Congress to address succession since the establishment of the Constitution [1792, 1886 & 1947]. The process in effect at the time of Reagan's shooting were governed by the Succession Act of 1947 and the 20th and 25th amendments to the Constitution.

The Succession Act of 1947 has been adjusted to take new and/or modified cabinet positions into account. After 9/11 there was much debate over where the head of Homeland Security should be placed in the succession. While Bush wanted this position to have precedence over other cabinet posts, many in both parties saw it's place at the end of the line since the tradition has been to order the cabinet positions in the order of establishment by Congress [this tradition dates to the Succession Law of 1886 and is how "State" gained the first position within the cabinet].

199 Reasons? I think all of Reagan's shitty points could be summed up in three sentences. But 143. Bedtime for Bonzo is funny, figured that writer would put that lame line in somewhere.

I was too lazy to look through every sentence, but my reason to hate Reagan:
200. For championing the ridiculous government fight on "obscenity" that focused on targets from Larry Flynt to the Dead Kennedys that did nothing but waste tax dollars.
