A CHINESE immigrant who sold obscene pornography on the streets of South Wales has been told he faces up to a year behind bars.

Quiang Yi He, 25, was also caught with more than 2,000 pirated Hollywood blockbuster DVDs when trading standards officers raided his house.

He also had six pornographic discs that showed women and animals.

It is the second time the Chinese immigrant, who needed an interpreter when he appeared in Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on Monday, has been caught with pornography that contravenes UK obscenity laws.

Cardiff council’s trading standards department says it seizes thousands of counterfeit and obscene discs every year that are being sold on the black market, mainly by illegal immigrants.

Dave Holland, head of trading standards, said it was now one of the biggest priorities for his officers.

He said: “In the last four to six weeks in Cardiff, we have probably taken possession of 10,000 to 15,000 discs.

“They range from the latest films in the cinema to the worst pornography involving animals and children.

“This isn’t rumpy-pumpy that you might have found in the 1970s. This is exploitation of young women and these guys have no concern who they sell it to.”

In Cardiff Magistrates’ Court, Yi He admitted four counts of selling pirated blockbusters Ocean’s 13, Pirates of the Caribbean, Casino Royale and 28 Weeks Later.

He also pleaded guilty to one charge under the Obscene Publications Act of possessing pornography showing obscene acts.

Magistrates were told that sentencing guidelines for offenders caught more than once with obscene pornography for sale advised they should receive the “full force of the law”, which allows sentences of up to a year.

They adjourned sentencing for reports, leaving all options open including committal of the case to crown court for sentence.

Yi He was given conditional bail to live at his home in Severn Road, Canton, Cardiff, and report twice a week to Canton Police Station.

The classic definition of obscenity under British law is if the publication “tends to deprave and corrupt”.
