LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A third adult movie performer tested positive Thursday for the virus that causes AIDS in the midst of an HIV outbreak that has halted most production, according to the director of an AIDS testing service.

"This is not over," said Sharon Mitchell, executive director of the nonprofit Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation, which screens performers for sexually transmitted diseases.

Mitchell declined to identify the woman diagnosed Thursday but said the performer had sex with five men before all were barred from adult movie sets under a voluntary quarantine in place since the first HIV case was announced on April 12.

A total of 53 people are on the quarantine list, and dozens of producers have shut down production until further HIV testing gives the all-clear.

Meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California claimed Thursday the county Department of Health Services violated the law by obtaining private medical information on potentially HIV-infected performers without a subpoena.

The ACLU and Being Alive Los Angeles, a group of 800 people with HIV or AIDS, sent a letter to the director of the health department's sexually transmitted disease program.

NPR had a piece on All Things Considered about AIM. Anybody catch it? Wasn't too long and didn't contain anything people here don't already know, but it indicates how far the news is spreading.

I'm guessing that the further the news spread, the more negative reaction the porn industry will get.

I'd really hate to sound political, but this is all a really big issue right now because this is an election year, for whoever wins the election determines on which direction our nation will go in,whether it's business as usual and normal(w/ John Kerry),or heading straight down the toilet and through the Gates of Hell(w/ G.W. Bush and his minions),so rightfully vote in the next six months, and make the rightful choice in saving our nation and its very future,so that porn doesn't get blown into the mainstream in a very negative attire(as it is right now).

Am I missing something because Bush has been in office for nearly 4 years and I can still get whatever porn I want right now. I think the president now and in the foreseeable future will have more important things on his mind what with all the bad shit going on in the world. Now the states might enact some regulations to do with health issues but that is a different topic. I don't think the Meese commission will be making a comeback under either Kerry or Bush. This is one thing I am not worried about.

You're definitely missing something. I don't know how old you are, so I don't know if you are able to remember what happened during the last right-wing assault on porn. The Meese commission findings and Operation Post Porn weren't set into motion until Reagan's SECOND term, and the prosecutions continued into Daddy Bush's administration. The big boom in porn that we all presently enjoy didn't occur until well into the Clinton era.

And it DOES effect porn consumers. Anyone remember how truly shitty porn was in the late eighties? It was because producers were so fearful of prosecution that they watered down their movies. It is what gave rise to the Vivid type of porn that everyone seems to hate now.

Just because it hasn't happened YET, doesn't mean it won't. The Extreme case is just a preview I fear if Bush gets re-elected. Not to mention how the Supreme court will be affected. Does anyone really want a court full of Scalias?

Hey, I'm not a big fan of Kerry, either. BUT if porn is to survive, he's our best bet.

Fuck it. BRING BACK CLINTON!!!

Fuck Clinton. Remember the Communications Decency Act that he signed in 1996? Yes, it was devised by a Republican-led Congress, but don't put anything past Kerry and the democrats, either. They follow the polls, if it's politically correct they'd jump on the anti-porn bandwagon as well. Every clown in office wants to be family friendly.

Evidence of Republican & Democrat complicity on obscenity:
Another lawyer involved in the effort to overturn the decency law said that Clinton wanted to sign the bill last summer for political reasons when he was running for re-election despite widespread qualms about its constitutionality.

(1) Congress Passes Online Indecency Bill, Clinton Expected to Sign,
CDT Plans Court Challenge

By overwhelming margins in both the House and Senate, Congress today (2/1)
approved legislation to dramatically restrict the First Amendment rights of
Internet users. With this act of Congress, the very same materials which
are legally available today in book stores and libraries would be illegal
if posted on World Wide Web sites or usenet newsgroups. If signed by
President Clinton as expected, this bill will transform the Internet
overnight from the freest communications medium to the most heavily
regulated medium in the United States.

CDT believes this legislation is unconstitutional. We are committed to
challenging it in the courts at the earliest possible opportunity.

Despite the sustained effort over the past 12 months by Senators Leahy
(D-VT), Feingold (D-WI), and Representatives Chris Cox (R-CA), Rick White
(R-WA), and Ron Wyden (D-OR) to defeat the bill, the House passed the
measure on a vote of 414 - 16, while the Senate concurred a few hours later
on a vote of 91 - 5. Ironically, the vote comes exactly one year to the day
that Senator Exon (D-NE) originally introduced the proposal (2/1/95).

I am old enough to remember the Meese commision and it's feared results but I was still able to enjoy my porn from th 70's onward until today with no ill effects. I loved 80's porn in the 80's and sometimes even now when I look back at some of the greats like Ginger Lynn and others. The ony politician to have a slight effect on my porn consumption was Rudy Guliani but all he caused me to do is walk one or two extra blocks to get porn in NYC. No worries man, these guys have more important stuff on their minds- unless of course janet jackson keeps showing us her titties.

Guys,no matter what happens within the next couple of oncoming months, porn will definitely still survive, since it's definitely lived longer than this current political administration, and will live even longer if anyone attempts to bulldoze it aside, which will(of course)automatically fail, since there's way more of us than there is of them in the White House.

Giuliani is reason enough to not vote Republican. Back in the day (1980s) there were about a hundred porn shops on 42nd street. Now there are about 5 on 8th Avenue alone. I know, I know, if you go down further there are more. Fuck that. 42ns Street is like a ghost town these days, as far as I'm concerned. I don't give a fuck about Disney© or Trump© or Warner Brothers© or Major League Baseball©. I want 42nd Street back the way it was: whores, drugs and porn. Call me a sentimentalist.

Yes, 42nd St commercialized is totally sad, but thanks to Rudy you can walk around without being accosted every 10 steps by somebody panhandling or out to mug you. When you come in through the Holland Tunnel you don't have to fight off all the squeegee junkies climbing over your windows. Plus, you can even go to the Bowery or the Bronx even without fear of a beating or a stabbing. NY is safer in many ways. The Deuce ruled and Disney & MTV suck, but just hop over the bridge to Brooklyn for your porn.

I kind of want to fuse your comments into one Zenman and Smutmutant because I agree with both of you. Like Zenman i miss the sleaze factor of the duece, I saw my first porn theater experience when a bunch of my buddies went to see a triple feature( of which I remember only The Filthy Rich with Jessie St.James ). On the other hand Smutmutant makes a good point too because although I didn't like Rudy for "censoring" 42nd st it really hasn't affected me in the way I thought it would. Instead of checking out stores along 42nd I just travel up and down 8th ave instead, and actually have found better bargains as well. I will say that I used to enjoy seeing pornstars at Show World and that seems to be Kaput now which is sad. I remember seeing Heather Hunter there before she became a big star and seeing Samantha Strong as well (although she was a bitch). That said it is much easier to get from one place to another in NYC now without being accosted by the normal bunch of miscreants and conmen which used to line the streets. Still I don't like the touristy nature of the Duece now either but it's a trade off some good some bad. Overall I am happy that I can still find great deals on adult dvds when I want them so as a fan I'm happy.
