I yanked this off RAME. The author's name is Adult Movie FAQ. I can't verify any of the info contained herein
Quote:
WHAT FOLLOWS IS PURE SPECULATION BASED ON WEB REPORTS. IT DOESN'T TAKE
INTO ACCOUNT A MILLION DIFFERENT THINGS, I'M SURE.
Now, most of its expenses are already paid for by the exhibitors. The
exhibitors are paying $29/sq.ft. for the privilege -- the smallest booths
are 10x10, so to walk in the door, you're paying $2900,plus if you go with
the generic booth set up, that's an additional $575 bucks; so each
exhibitor is paying, minimum, $2900. (AVN doesn't see the $575 for the
booth materials; it seems to be provided by a subcontractor of the
convention center.)
Now, how many exhibitors were there? Shitloads. The biggest booths are
Vivid, VCA and Hustler (hmmm... what do they have in common? Flynt!) at
50x30 each -- so each booth is $43,500 -- just for the space. The big
three booths are $130,500.
(All this info is available on AEE's site:
http://show.adultentertainmentexpo.com/adult-expo/V40/brochures.cvn?ID=8 --
I'm getting the dimensions from the AEE1-04-HALL A layout map...)
What does the Sands Expo Center charge for floor space? According to an
article in January 2003's NY Times, "The list price at the Sands is 35
cents per square foot of exhibit space"
(This also lends some credence to the rumors that the show is moving to
Mandalay Bay next year -- if the show floor is actually 5 cents cheaper per
sq. foot over the Sands...)
Going to the Sands website (www.sandsexpo.com), we see that Exhibit Hall A
is 178,000 square feet. If we do the math, 178,000 sq.ft. x $0.35 =
$62,300. Could that be the daily rate the Sands is charging the organizers
of AEE? Multiply that by 5 days (I assume you need an extra day for set up
-- 178K sq. ft. woth of stuff don't go up in an hour...) and you have
$311,500 to rent the Sands Exhibit Hall. (Thereabouts.)
So, the big three booths pay for 1/3 of the rent. Metro, Jill Kelly and
Wicked also have 50x30 (total 4500 sq.ft); and granddaddy GVA has 50x40
(another 2000 sq.ft). So that's 6500 sq. feet or $188,500. Take that,
plus Flynt's $130,500 and you got yourself $319,000 -- rent is covered.
Now, none of this takes into account the "sponsor" status that Hustler,
Wicked, et al enjoys -- so I am sure there are discounts, etc... not
everything in life is list price. :-)
But even without the hundreds of small exhibitors who had booths; floor
space is probably pretty well covered... so the fan tickets are more or
less gravy.
I admire the show's organizers -- they have a hard job to do putting this
thing on, but I would hazard a guess they're not running it as a charitable
loss... :-)

Yeah, those booths looked like they paid a lot of money just to be officially there at this year's AVN Expo(which explains why Rodney Moore and Max Hardcore both partnered themselves up with Exquisite Pleasures[after having their own indie booths for years],as did Wankus and the KSEX crew partnering with Adam&Eve),and the success of this event really shows that they'll be back with even larger, more lavish(and expensive) looking booths.
