The intem I have been looking at are external capture cards. Plug in the RCAs or S-Video and audio and you can record it all on your CPU.

I have quite a few old VHS cassettes I don't want to love forever so I figure it's be a project for me to do some converting.

Anyone recommendations or anything I would be avoiding?

General tips would be good too. Even the cheapest ones don't get awful reviews and the range between 20-140 so far.

Mine is more complicated....involves a VCR, Sony D8 and Windows Movie Maker....use the D8 as the digital pass thru...download...edit and then burn to DVD.

Dino, you aren't following my post. I need some external based device which will accept RCA cables.

It would accept RCA cables up to the output from the Sony D8 cam to the computer.

You could also just buy a Sony DVDirect® DVD Recorder MC6 and skip the puter altogether.

i don't believe in nice cameras-they capture your soul. damn white devils.

what you want is an external box, canopus is where to look first, that accepts legacyish-inputs and then uses firewire(if possible) or usb to pass it to your computer where it's software's job from there on.

the external thang should be no more than 150. not sure what your goals are with the material, but if you have the horsepower and money i can recommend some software, if you're not the good thing is the actual codecs to create archival shit cost zilch. and there's nothing commercial that's ballpark in terms of speed and quality.

I had good results using something similar to the EasyCap mentioned above -- it looks the same, but didn't have that name on it. For $10, try your luck and see how it works for you.

Since you're asking USB, my guess is you're gonna attempt this on a laptop or netbook?

DDG: I'm using a fairly souped up gaming desk top.

I have a huge collection of old/obscure comedy VHS cassettes and I really want to put this on DVD.

Make a Dual and Vanishing Point double feature. Maybe with Damnation Alley on it too. I really like car movies where the car is an actual character.

My PC does have firewire ports all over the place, I is asking about USB because that is all I have seen as far as this kind of device.

I used to like to collect video. I even have a 6 hour cassette of the very first night FOX was on the air. Tracey Ullman show, the Simpsons first show, etc.

source(vcr)-cable-capture box(or card depending on your comfort level sticking shit into an open computer)-usb/firewire-your computer's hard drive. you'll be happier archiving to a catalog of compressed files, easy to back up to a 16gb flash card. you can always put the files on a dvd since everything plays .avi files now or re-encode the damn thing. dvd's aren't a solution that'll last as long as a portable drive or flash based storage.

Jameson. That is actually what I am going after. I just need recommendations for a capture/input devise from VCR to CUP. There are a fair number of them out there for around 40 bucks.

Anyway, I agree with you on procedure and tech. I just want to know what device I should buy. SOmething that is 20 bucks could be equally perfect as something that is 140. The source VHS isn't stellar.

Also when I am through with vids I want to use it for digitizing my record collection...

That reminds me I have to figure out how it's grounded...

ask and you shall receive-20 bucks on the dot and well-reviewed.

you're saving some money simply because it's not bundled with some garbage pinnacle software. it basically passes shit through which doesn't require much hardware so any chinese factory can make one cheap. if you had wanted the box to compress shit or be packed with modern inputs it'd get pricier, but you have the juice to make mpeg1s into whatever you want pretty quickly.

Newegg and $20-If that's not what you're looking for let me know

Thank you kindly.

Do any of you folks have any experience using one of theses things.

The biggest problem is that my VCR is really not happy and it can rarely play through a cassette without damaging it (breaking the tape. Yes I realize I could get a cassette rewind but that isn't the direction I'm trying to go.

Want to digitize tapes and then trash them. Or build a fort or something.

And we're talking, Death Row Game show and When Nature Calls. I'm not preserving relics.

Some out of print gems might interest XPTs and I'll make a list.

My guess is that everything you're trying to convert can be found on torrent. I just found a torrent of that Shmenges:Last Polka movie on tracker3. Wouldn't that be easier than converting?

If you did then what's the problem? That file you uploaded to tracker3 could be burned to DVD. That's what you're ultimately trying to do, right?

Actually that file came from me ripping a cassette to an AVI about 7 or 8 years ago when this technology wasn't quite as prevalent.

Ultimately I don't care about burning stuff to DVD's. I just want to have copies of media on other formats aside from VHS. Just want to avoid having interesting stuff become totally obscure.
