E.Y.Davis Human Garbage Registered: 04/02/09 Posts: 1541 Loc: Mississippi	I guess it is a concept that seems dated and uncool now days, but I was wondering about this: Do you have a hero, in the old fashioned, 1950's sense of somebody you admire? I don't guess it really means much more than that, or does it imply something more than that? All day today between doing laundry, driving to the train station, walking the dog, etc, etc, I have been watching clips on youtube of various interviews and debates with Christopher Hitchens. I find this guy fascinating and my "role model"... er hero? Anybody else? _________________________ --Some of us look for The Way in opium and some in God, some of us in whiskey and some in love. It does seem an outdated notion, but I do think it is hardwired into us. It's not that the law dictates what names/spellings are allowed, it has more to do with what is not allowed (good taste/decency/etc.); I think it was left to the discretion of the registrar (most things in NL are left to the discretion of one official or another). The law probably still exists, but will not be applied often. I know from years ago that certain things were not allowed, like Hitler as middle-name or brand-names. In the case of Dennis Bergkamp, it's kinda silly. The difference in the pronunciation of the word Denis vs. the word Dennis is quite notable, but requiring Dennis to be registered as name is making a mountain out of an anthill. Still, he's one of the best football players ever and certainly the best Dutch player after Cruyff. _________________________ The only thing you got that I want, is your suffering.

When I was younger I guess I had some people who I thought of as heroes but at this point my attitude has shifted more to an "all heroes die" stance. My grandfather was a hero. He was a doctor during WW2 and came from a very humble background. A self-made man so to speak. As he got older I found out how racist he was (Pennsylvania Dutch upbringing will do that to you I guess). And I don't mean racist like "this neighborhood went to hell when the Puerto Ricans moved in". I mean racist like when I brought my Japanese/White girlfriend to meet the family at Thanksgiving dinner one year he made her feel incredibly uncomfortable. This wasn't a random Puerto Rican he was driving past in the car, this was my girlfriend. Then later I found it was very hard to idolize a man who was wheelchair bound and couldn't speak properly due to strokes.
