Just brought home a new family member. 8 wk old black lab. It's sooner than I expected, but this is a pup from a friends bitch, and the sire is also an incredible dog. Both have championships as do their parents. So, this guy is a thoroughbred.

As usual, he picked me, but he was truly the most laid back of the litter. So far, all he's done "lab-like" is eat. I expect the lab-like shitting and personal property destruction to begin a little later tonight.

Yeah there will be pics. I started to post this in "not worth it's own thread" but realized it will probably wind up worth it's own thread. I'll post pictures and stories about the little bugger as he grows up. Right now he's asleep in his crate, chasing birds and grunting like a pig in his sleep.

What's his name???

Next year I'm getting a dog. Haven't decided if its going to be an inside or outside yet. That is going to help determine the breed.

Enjoy him.

Eight weeks is generally recognized as ideal. Some people go as early as seven weeks but any earlier than that is not recommended. At eight weeks the Mom's done her part and needs a break, and the pups form a really strong bond to their new family.

As for his name, I'm leaning toward "Scout". I usually wait a day or two for a natural name to suggest itself. We named the last cat we got too soon... she has a name that the vet has on his records for her, but we just call her "little" now. Something always comes up that fits.

I knew a pill head that had 2 black labs. One of them got excited one day when they heard the dude get home and he stopped to talk to a neighbor on the front lawn. The lab ran and jumped through his big front bay window in its excitement....a custom window. They were pretty excitable dogs. Its best not to encourage it when they are small since they don't seem to mature mentally as fast as they do physically.

This would be a good time for XPT to recommend dog names.

I like Boo.

You gonna use him as a retriever or just a pet. Those championships you spoke of, they show or trial?

Larry is a solid dog name.
Jerk, this is where i was looking at AB's when my dog looked like he was gonna check out. They are honest about the dogs they have and you'd be doing dogdom a solid:

I have a buddy that has done well with adopted dogs.

Outside dog, I think I know the what and where already. If I get an inside dog, I'd probably go the adopted route, and get a small one. Then get an outdoors one in a couple years.

I appreciate the name suggestions, especially the Mockingbird themed ones, but I think Scout is still up front.

The championships mentioned are field trials, and they are all working dogs. I really just wanted a companion but I think I may try to work this dog (and myself) to full potential and see what he can do. My wife is even encouraging me to do so knowing the time it requires. The force is strong in this one.

Congrats bornyo. Labs are great fucking dogs when raised properly.

On a related note, I was at this fundraiser thing this weekend, and there was a family there that had a Bloodhound-Labrador service dog that alerts the family when the son has seizures. Just a magnificent-looking dog. He looked like a large lab with long ears, and soft hair that was black with light brown mottled spots in it.

Kind of looked like this guy here, but with darker fur.

A bloodhound-lab mix would make an incredible retriever. I mean, that would be the ideal mix. Labs have good noses and can smell birds in the weeds but nothing like a bloodhound.

I built a kennel for him yesterday while he just slept in the sun. It was hard to imagine all the devious ways the little bastard will devise to get himself out of there.

The little fucker just went to the vet today for the first time on my dime. I took him to his Momma's vet who helped whelp the litter and gave them their first shots, etc.

I was pretty pleased as he got fecal sample probed, poked and physicaled, his first heartworm and flea treatments and dewormed for $59.00. I can deal with that. (also a bag of Science Diet dog food).

He's been going to work with me every day and hangs out in a "crate" I put in my office. Office opinion is divided on the appropriateness of a dog at work but that's just because the naysayers have never been around a good dog. And this is a good dog. The majority of my workday is outside the office anyway, and he is in another crate in my car during that time so his effect on office life is minimal.

I'm going to wait over a year, if possible. I'm not going to let him run loose and impregnate all females in a 5 mile radius, but I would like to breed him if he reaches his potential. The world needs more high quality Labs, not more stupid puppy mill specimens.

Then again, he may go crazy like the one I had before and the only way to manage him will be to have him neutered.

my guy was going bonkers by the time he hit 5 months; scrapping male dogs left and right, humping anything humpable. It's too bad, cuz i would have liked to have bred him as well.

My dog hates the science diet. I can only get him to eat it if he is really hungry, then never as much as he should eat, on the other hand he loves the cheaper purina one brand.

Science Diet is just over priced crap. If you are looking for a good commercial dog food without going raw then look for grain free preferably baked. You won't find it at the grocery store or at a retail pet supplier like Petco. You'll have to look for an independent feed supplier in your area. Its usually easier to find the dog food you want to feed and then check out their website. Most usually have a list of their retailers by zip code to find one near you or worse case you buy 3 for 4 months worth of dog food at a time and get it shipped to your home to reduce the shipping charges. I'd list some links to some of the pet food information but I deleted all that shit when my dog died back at the beginning of the year. Use Google to look up info on grain free dog food or grain free hypoallergenic dog food.

My dog had some issues with loose stools, bad ear infections and hot spots till I changed to a grain free dog food. A lot of dogs have grain/gluten allergies that show up with lots of different symptoms. Vets tend to treat the symptoms but don't fix the source problem and many will discount it if you suggest its food related or they give you their expensive prescription dog food that still uses corn, wheat and rice as a filler. The grain free food looks more expensive but the dog will end up needing to eat less of it because it has less or no fillers so the costs even out and you'll end up with less vet visits if your dog has dietary related allergies. A few months after switching to grain free my dog used to get alot of complements about how nice his coat looked and felt.

I fed my dog this stuff

http://www.naturesvariety.com/Instinct/dog/kibble/chicken

becasue it was the best choice with a reliable retailer close to me so I didn't have to have dog food shipped via UPS anymore. I saved about 30 dollars in shipping charges every 3 months. It worked out well and my dog liked it. He also liked the rabbit and salmon versions of that kibble but the retailer didn't always have it so I just stuck with the chicken based kibble.

Purina Pro Plan is pricey, but the quality justifies the price. Shredded blend Chicken and Lamb flavors have actual bits of meat in the dry food. The dogs I used to have loved it. 15 years feeding it, only time a dog had a loose stool is when they were sick. Really a terrific product, especially if you are going to work and trial the dog. Just don't over feed the stuff.

I've been feeding him Purina One puppy food for large breed dogs. He loves it. The primary ingredient is Chicken (Well, probably chicken byproducts but that's beside the point- no dog food contains white meat only)

When the bag I bought runs out I'll try the little 5lb sample of Science Diet and see how he responds. I'm not all that interested in getting into an arms race on dog food- otherwise I'd be cooking food for him every night. His vets said in their opinion it was preferable to feed a meat-as primary-ingredient food- even as they handed me the grain-first Science Diet. BTW- rice as an additive does not aggravate a gluten intolerant dog. Rice is gluten free as gluten comes from wheat, barley, oats and rye.

He was weaned on Purina Pro Plan food and came to me with a beautiful coat. He is now 10 days on Purina One and still beautiful. If He can maintain weight and growth and coat I'll leave him on the cheaper Purina One. As he matures and has to work harder I'll think about upgrading.

Fiend: I have never heard of a rice intolerant individual before so I apologize. I misread your post apparently, as you did mine. I was only addressing gluten intolerance.

If I wound up with a dog that couldn't tolerate gluten OR rice, it would probably be goodbye dog as that is a flaw that does not belong in the gene pool as harsh as that might sound. A cat would be dispatched forthwith, a good dog just probably.

The young man is coming along great. He got to go to "the bar" a week ago, and sat in his stool just fine.

He sits, he sometimes stays, he lies down on command and most of all he retrieves and brings his bird to hand. He has no fear of water though I've done nothing to encourage him to swim. Being surrounded by a pond, a water-crazed lab is a pain in the neck when you can't get him from the house to the truck to go to work without him taking a swim.

He is still eating Purina One and as you can see he looks great. When this is gone I'm skipping the Science Diet and going to Diamond Advanced. There's a version of the same food at Costco but I can't remember the brand name. It has outrageously positive reviews and is very reasonable.

gorgeous dog B....

any issues with ear infections at all?. every lab we've had couldn't stay out of the water and a few times a year we'd have to treat ear issues no matter how many preventative steps we took.

Lou, I had terrible luck with my yellow lab and ear infections but as I said- he was water-crazed. We had hand raised mallards in our pond and he swam for hours per day trying to catch them.

I want this one to have no fear but I don't want him to be as nuts about it as Tate was.

I had this stuff that smelled like cucumbers I'd squirt in his ears. I guess it was similar to our swimmers ear remedies. But when they spend 5-6 hours a day in the water it doesn't work.

yeah we had some blue fluid in a squirt bottle that we'd dose em with. i think it caused as many problems as it solved. and from what more than a few vets and breeders told me... those heavy ears are the one flaw in an otherwise perfectly designed animal.

Our lab once jumped in a river full of spawned out salmon and rolled around in all the carcasses. It was fucking horrible. Strangely, someone recommended washing him with tomato sauce which somehow got all of the smell out. He lived almost 20 years and was a great retriever although he would never let go of the birds. Usually their heads would come off when we'd pull the bird away from him.

In his later years he was sort of blind and couldn't find the ducks anymore, so we would use a tag-team approach. Our rottweiler would swim out to the ducks and the lab would follow. The rott would freak out as soon as he realized he had a living bird in his mouth and then the lab would snatch it from him and swim back with it.

yup... the first dog i remember our family having was a beagle mix of some sort. mostly beagle though and full on male. i remember watching that dog through the window take full on runs to the end of leash till he snapped it and then he was off on his own adventures. my old man had to go get him twice after he'd been hit by cars and once after he fought a shepherd. sadly, one day he never came back but that's how it goes. we all die alone or chasing pussy.

Home remedy for skunk spray:

Quote:
The Skunk Remedy Recipe

In a plastic bucket, mix well the following ingredients:

1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide

1/4 cup of baking soda

1 to 2 teaspoons liquid soap

for very large pets one quart of tepid tap water may be added to enable complete coverage.

Wash pet promptly and thoroughly, work the solution deep into the fur. Let your nose guide you, leave the solution on about 5 minutes or until the odor is gone. Some heavily oiled areas may require a "rinse and repeat" washing.

Skunks usually aim for the face, but try to keep the solution out of the eyes - it stings. If you have any cuts on your hands you might want to wear latex gloves for the same reason.

After treatment, thoroughly rinse your pet with tepid tap water.

Pour the spent solution down the drain with running water.

NEVER, ever, store mixed solution in a closed bottle, sprayer, etc. Pressure will build up until the container bursts. This can cause severe injury.

**********Notes**************

1) Clean plastic mixing containers and utensils are preferred. Metals encourage auto-decomposition of the peroxide.

2) Hydrogen Peroxide 3% solution is usually sold in pint (500ml) bottles, so you'll need two. The 3% grade is often marked "U.S.P.", meaning that it meets the standards for medical use and purity as set forth in the United States Pharmacopoeia.

The use of other strengths/grades is not recommended unless you're a chemist, and even then a trip to the 24-hour drugstore is much better than a trip to the emergency room.

3) Use baking soda, not baking powder. "Arm and Hammer" is one popular brand. Baking soda is also called: Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Bicarbonate, U.S.P., Bicarbonate of Soda, and Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate. Do not confuse any of the above with Washing Soda, which is Sodium Carbonate. Washing Soda is about 100 times more alkaline than Baking Soda and can cause skin burns to both you and your pet.

4) Two preferred brands are "Softsoap" and "Ivory Liquid". As far as auto-decomposition of the peroxide is concerned, the surfactant package in these two is fairly inert. Heavy-duty grease-cutting brands such as "Dawn" are less inert, and hair shampoo is probably the worst.

5) Once mixed, the peroxide slowly breaks down into water and oxygen gas. Thus it gets weaker with time and so it should be used promptly. The exact rate depends on temperature, pH, and catalysts such as trace amounts of metals (iron, etc.) in the soap and/or tap water.

How much pressure will the complete decomposition of 3% hydrogen peroxide produce in a closed container ??? It depends on how full the container is. Assuming negligible solubility of Oxygen in water, a bottle half-full of peroxide will develop about 140 psi. A bottle 3/4 full would develop 420 psi. This can do a lot of damage.

Highly pure hydrogen peroxide decomposes very slowly if kept cool and in a dark place, a few percent a year. The more dilute solutions usually decompose faster (due to impurities in the dilution water) and have a trace of stabilizer added. So why aren't the bottles in the store bloated or bursting ? Look carefully inside the cap... you'll see some very tiny holes in the cap liner to let the oxygen gas escape. A good reason to always store bottles upright.

Look for an expiration date on your peroxide. If you're using stuff which has been sitting around in your medicine cabinet for years, buy fresh peroxide.

Alaska is the only state without skunks. The only reason I know what skunks smell like is from driving across the country and smelling one that got ran over on the freeway.

Alaska is the only State that elected someone like Palin Governor. Did you ever fuck her?

If not, get off my cloud.

Never met Sarah Palin, but allow me to further poop on your thread by posting about the guy in my avatar. He's a complete lunatic who managed to get 22% of the vote when he ran for Senate as a Democrat. Here's a video of him from his Mayoral run where he discusses his energy policy and "technology."

It's hard for me to get angry about people shitting in an XPT thread with a title and purpose as specific as this one. I'm sure I'm guilty of the same thing I just can't remember when.

Post a couple more pics of the pup and things should shift back to your topic again.

We had a beagle that I was terrified of. He would bite me and my brother whenever my parents left the room and we had to put her down.
I bought some kinda oatmeal based deal when my dog got sprayed . it worked pretty good.

I'm having to adjust to a black lab. The fucker gets lost in the dark. I had a promotional jagermeister lapel light with a blinking LED that I took to clipping to his collar when I let him out at night. That didn't last.

He is still a very exceptional dog with a lot of drive. Probably the best I've ever had and I've had some great ones.
