We don't have, but need an IT person at work. The problem I'm having is I have a desktop in the office, a laptop to take on the road and an android phone. I'm always needing a file from one device or the other when I'm miles away. Whats the best way for me to synch all these files and data? It could be freeware/storage or something you buy. It just needs to work and have plenty of storage space. Someone mentioned dropbox and I'm looking into it.

A USB stick or portable hard disk will do what online storage does, just independently from shoddy mobile web access.

I agree that a usb stick works, but it requires some vigilance on the part of the user, and you wind up with old copies. Say for instance I copy a drawing file off the desktop onto a thumbdrive, then copy it onto my laptop and edit it. I have to then copy it back, answering questions about whether to overwrite the old and whatnot, and do it again when it goes back on the desktop. This assumes I remember to grab that drawing file before I hit the road, which can easily happen when you are in one city one night thinking you'll be in the office the next day and instead you find yourself three states away having never darkened the office door. Regardless of where the data is stored, there's gotta be a foolproof way to keep it synched.

Pipsqueak made a good point. I've used Dropbox sparingly maybe two dozen times and not in months, and it seemed ok.

How large are the files? Could you attach and email them to yourself, titling each one accordingly? "File XYZ Udate 2"

That's what I've been doing- emailing them to my gmail account. I still have to manually manage revised files to make sure the most current version is on all devices.

i load up my gmail like you do. i'm not sure how a usb would work with your phone?. there must be some app or "cloud" service though. i'm sure i hear an ad on stern or o&a about some such shit.

hav2 and i talked about remote programs like teamviewer once which we sometimes use but there's always someone live on the other end.

Lou you came to the Ron & Fez bandwagon a little late, but you really missed some funny shit when Ron Bennington did live-reads for Carbonite's cloud service. Lots of riffing about "Carby", the little drunken slightly misbehaving mascot for them. I think he made it so damned funny the company made him stop. Little Carby was always in trouble.

It was similar to his planned single panel comic strip called "Snoots: the Toddler with the Drinking Problem"

For someone riled up about literacy at times it is a shame.

Thanks, got it now. These pet names for usernames are confusing.

I signed up for free dropbox but that's only 2GB then after that it's 9.99 a month. I'm freaking out a little bit because as I understand it the files are now online on a free service. (I backed everything up first).

It is working swimmingly doing what I want, but the 2gig is not a lot when you might need to pull a file from '06 to update it for '12 and want all that accessible.
