Lunesta did nothing for me. Ativan works much better. An m.D. colleague told me that was because Ativan is a longer-lasting drug that Xanax, for example.

ativan and xanax actually have very similar durations of availability. hence why ativan's one of the ones used for IV purposes-it's very effective and comes on fast without the blotto mental stuff alzo/xanax tends to be associated with. examples of orally-administered benzos in the longer-lasting category are good old valium/diaz and klonopin/clonazepam. both should do the same thing for 2x as long. however, if you just want to get knocked out, xanax and ativan are much more effective.

hypnotics like ambien(cr or regular) and lunesta are hit of miss to a degree, if that window they make you sleepy gets missed, you're just going to be foggy more than anything.

off-label people have luck with trazodone, no habit formation, but just doesn't work for some.

for my money, a small dose of off-label seroquel(25-75mg does quite a bit) is about the closest thing to hitting yourself with a ball-peen hammer and feeling fine the next morning without forming tolerance or habit. higher doses don't correlate with creating fatigue so while it's not unsafe per se to do so based on the range it's taken safely at, 500mg isn't going to help you anymore than a hundred. it's about as close to a tranquilizer dart you're going to get, and at low doses doesn't have any of the warnings it'd be wise to heed at 700mg/day if you're bonkers.

oh, forgot to mention plain old antihistamines without any decongestants mixed in, melatonin, avoid valerian if possible for milder or infrequent insomnia.

for some people, i can't personally say anything about it, good old clonidine seems to work wonders without much in the way of side-effects at all. that's another one i'd only suggest looking into with your md.

I'm on amitriptyline (jondra?) and lorazapam for nightnight stuff. Lunestra fucked me all up. Slept like a baby, but was really dizzy and spacey the day after. Benadryl is a good otc sleep aid.

It used to be super easy to order Norco's online by just filling out a bogus I-hurt-my-knee form, you'd be able to get up to 90 seriously over-priced pills. There is 2 types of dependence associated with drug abuse. Physical dependence and psychological dependence. They usually both work hand in hand but depending on the drug determines how much. Most drugs of severe abuse potential cause a strong physical dependence, like heroin. You find a stronger psychological dependence with drugs like THC(cannabis). Another factor in drug abuse is an individuals mental health where someone is self medicating through recreational drug use that leads to addiction.

Probably one of the best all around books for a laymen about drug use and abuse is "From Chocolate to Morphine" at least the edition I read back in the 90s. I don't know if it has been updated or revised and the PC Nazi's had it changed but it was a good reference for discussing different classes of drugs, their affects and which methods of taking the drugs have the highest risk of dependencies to those drugs(Like injestion, smoking, snorting , and injecting the drugs). When I had read it I always thought it should have been a companion reference to a sane drug education/awareness course for young people who are at a high risk age for experimentation. It offered some very straight forward information that assumes you are going to experiment rather than just tell you to abstain.
