...with a little help from Skronker.
They just launched their new newsletter, the "Weekly Fix".
Firstly, they decided to put the tag SEXUALLY-EXPLICIT: in the subject line, an absolute sure-fire way to get it labelled as spam by any automatic filtering system. (I've received over 1500 emails with that in the subject line over the past year. Until now every single one had been completely unsolicited.)
Secondly, they appear to have sent it out to their entire list of registered users. This would actually be perfectly reasonable if they had a newsletter from the word go, but consider... over the past 5+ years, how many people have registered at ADT, used the site briefly, then forgotten about it? Quite a few I'm willing to bet. How do you think someone who did that years ago will react to this email? They may not even remember ever registering at ADT.
They've already had spam complaints made to their upstream provider.

you're pretty much nuts sending mass-mailings with that subject from the U.S.
you're right-most members have one or less posts there and a decent chunk of them don't want it and a chunk of them are going to be annoyed enough to use the spam buttons many isps have to report it-and someone will notice since they're not hosted in latvia or myanmar.

I took it up with their upstream also. The rule on spam is very simple and unambiguous. If a person didn't request a commercial message, don't send it.
Chaosunlimited (the upstream) passed my e-mail to ADT, who sent me an e-mail telling me when I registered and how many posts I have made. This is completely irrelevant. Registering and posting is not a solicitation for commercial messages. There's nothing on the registration page about being added to a mailing list, and there's nothing on the entry page for posts about being added to a mailing list, so pointing out that I've registered and posted isn't a justification for sending spam.
I'm always amazed at the number of people who believe that possessing a list of e-mail addresses gives them the right to spam those addresses. Or that any sort of unrelated communication constitutes permission to send commercial e-mail.
At any rate, ADT has deactivated my account, so whatever little posting I did there is now at an end. Apparently, the solution to complaints about illegitimate activities is to stop any legitimate activities involving the complainers. Stopping the illegitimate activity doesn't seem to have been considered as an option.

Now you know everything I know.
Note that they fixed the problem with the spam by removing me from the Weekly Fix mailing list. But then they went a step further and deactivated my account, which had nothing to do with the spam.
I think deactivation at ADT is Pavlovian. Whenever there's a problem, they've trained themselves to deactivate someone. They may not even be aware anymore that they're doing it.

Yeah, I got lazy and just looked at the mail headers.
Zen, if you do a traceroute and send packets to chaosunlimited.com, the upstream is the domain the packets pass through just before hitting chaosunlimited.com. In this case, that's alter.net, which is owned by uunet.
If you're using a Win box, open the console and type
tracert chaosunlimited.com
You'll see route the packets take as they travel to chaosunlimited.com.
For those using *n*x, the command is "traceroute".
