There must be something more to this. You're well within your rights to just walk out the door and take a vacation without telling anyone. She probably told someone something, or took some action that caused someone to reasonably believe she hadn't walked off but had instead been kidnapped.
Or more likely she couldn't afford a lawyer. 90k is absurd - a student isn't going to be able to pay that - you can't get blood from a turnip.
I'm all for making people repay when the search is their fault and not someone else assuming something. But there is *no* *way* 60k or 90k is realistic - no way that isn't a padded number - the sheriff would go broke spending that kind of money on every missing person report.
