I don't know, Luke, the Outfit still makes too much money pimping, racketeering, taking over unions and scamming the government to have diversified like their New York kin. The best thing that ever happened to them were all these stories about the death of the Italian mafia.

Funny story is the old underboss was released from prison, and one of the prerequisites of his parole was to avoid any contact with organized crime figures. So he took out an ad in every issue of the Reader up until pretty recently. The text read something like "If you are a member of any mafia, or any kind of a criminal, please stay away from me. Thank you."

A better question might be what other video companies still have mob ties? I think it would be difficult for some dago to go shakedown some webmaster in Indiana, but who the fuck am I to speculate.
I think it's far more realistic to find their greasy, chubby, sausage fingers in some video operation or better a strip club.

As a former employee of "Their Thing", but being so white I hadn't a chance of being made, I feel I'm qualified to comment in this thread. I worked in one of their legitimate businesses, but as was explained to me, we were used to wash cash, and lots of it. The fact my father was a G-Man and showed me "family tree" charts to prove to me I was working for the darkside while still in high school just adds credence to what I'm going to say.

They paid and treated me well. I was very good at what I did for them, and in spite of that my boss kicked my ass out, up, and into college. I still count him as a huge influence in my life and as a good friend.

His bosses, on the other hand, give me the creeps.

As I was saying, I know no one from the mob. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I pick up on gossip, but this is Chicago. It's weird but a few years ago you barely heard anything. Then the hired truck scandal (or Hired Truck Scandal, as they call it) occurred, where the city was paying a bunch of money for... hired trucks... while city trucks were idling. It turned out that most of the hired truck companies were set up as long as thirty years ago by Outfit members. One of them even turned during the first Harry Aleman trial, which was back in the late 1980s. His company lived on.

The Outfit isn't as elect as what I've heard about the East Coast families. Not being Italian was not a big deal. Hump and Gussie Alex, to name two non-Italians, could never be the top guy but both were solid #2s for a long time. Right now, none of them have been very shy about taking on partners in Chinatown on a more or less equal basis to help exploit their fellow yellows.

i don't think the italians are looking at a bright future, they've got their hands in a lot but the feds know who's who and coordinating with the cops in italy forever. the problem is they're down in numbers and up in years-you've got active bosses in their 70's and you never see someone under 40 get arrested. the us and italy are rich and it's hard to find people willing to shoot someone in the back of the head for a grand here. they're basically middlemen at this point, the mexicans and colombians have the drug pipeline and the ruskies are in everything and are totally global and so deeply interwoven in government and industries they're harder to figure out. we've got decades on the guidos and we know so little about the russians and albanians we let major players into the country thinking they're civilians.

the albanians are fucking nuts, and the italians have been using them but they're just too hungry and vicious to stay that way. the russians and drug-lords have more guns and less value of life and the russians control banking and nukes there.

my guess is that the italians keep trying to legitamize, otherwise they're going to be in trouble.
