main problem with firefox is that is has a massive memory leak and can consume over 100mb of memory. Right now i'm at 87mb. I don't know why they don't fix it.

The tweaks you'll want to make right now

Now that you have the basics, we get to the good part: making changes to improve Firefox's performance and capabilities.

Fix a memory leak in Firefox 1.0
Firefox is supposed to dynamically release memory from its RAM cache to other Windows applications as needed. Unfortunately, Firefox 1.0 seems to consume more memory than it should, which hurts performance, when set to the default of 51200 KB (51 MB).

To solve this, Firefox power users recommend limiting the memory cache using the Configuration Console. This frees up memory for other apps, speeding up everything to a greater or a lesser extent, depending on your machine and the applications you run. Here's how the trick works:

Step 1. Type about:config into Firefox's Address Bar and press Enter.

Step 2. Right-click any row, then click New, Integer. Type or paste the following preference name into the dialog box that appears (this is a hidden preference that doesn't exist in the Configuration Console until you create it):

browser.cache.memory.capacity

Step 3. Click OK, then enter the following integer number into the next dialog box, representing 16 MB of RAM for the cache:

16000

Step 4. Click OK to close the dialog box, then close all instances of Firefox and restart it.

Of course I am joking- I'm a wiseass. I don't know much about puters but I do know which browsers i like.

Ps- thanks for that info Evil K. - with my crappy computer( and no memory to spare) I had better do that now

that may be helpful if you're severely limited(<512) in memory, but the fact is you're just capping it. it's still sloppy code and it's ridiculous it hasn't been fixed yet.

My FF task is generally about 400 MB. I haven't had a problem with memory leaks in any version of FF.

"Leak" has a technical term for programmers that means that repeating at least one action (clicking on a link over and over for example) would cause resource (memory) to be (unexpectedly) unavailable in the future. In other words, being 87 MB is not a leak, but increasing 100 KB in size with each downloaded file would be.

The statement "Firefox is supposed to dynamically release memory from its RAM cache to other Windows applications as needed" is wrong when applied to the FF cache; that guy doesn't understand paging! But limiting the cache might work if there is a design problem in the FF cache or the Windows VM system. It's credible since the NT VM has some weird paging algorithms I don't think have ever been documented - probably more 1970's-era VMS thinking - and nobody really knows how to tune a large in-process cache for Windows.

Ok I had read people calling it a memory leak. I guess it's not because if you look at you task manager processes tab while FF is running, you can see how much memory it consumes. But when you minimize the FF screen, it drops to about 5-10 mb. That wouldn't happen with a real memory leak I guess.

i think it's really a resource-handle leak rather than a memory one. IE's just much better about letting the system know when resources are no longer necessary.

If it's "CoolWebSearch" or CWS that sucks - it's supposed to be hard to get rid of.

Go to the HiJackThis guy's web site at http://www.merijn.org/ and look for Cwshredder in the downloads page. It's not on his page anymore but it's still freely available from the people who bought it from him, and he has a link to the new home.

Back up everything first. I've never tried this before, but it's the best bet I know of.
