Ever read Yukio Mishima's Temple of the Golden Pavilion? The conclusions I walk away with from that book is that Fayner was in the same room while his mother slept with another man (with his dying, tubercular father nearby) and that he's destined to burn beautiful things. One leads to stuttering, the other is but the last link in the chain.
