Fuckin' great, the thread has turned into a battle over Tarantino who steals his ideas from obscure foreign releases.
Every director/writer steals ideas from other directors or movies they've seen. Tarantino was just smart about it.
not that smart, he got caught.
Got caught?
Tarantino championed 'City on Fire' from the moment Reservoir Dogs hit Cannes. He never shyed away from the fact that he borrows from the movies he loves. Other directors steal ideas all the time - but nobody points a spotlight. Kinji Fukasaku, director of Battle Royale told a Japanese magazine that he stole the threeway stand-off from Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs. Stephen Soderbergh, a darling of the critics, has churned out with his last half dozen movies nothing but remakes - but nobody points out that he's stealing, or is a hack, no, they simply nominate him for Oscar after Oscar because of his vision. What fucking vision? At least Tarantino works a story around an idea, rather than copying the idea forthright.
As for his own originality, what he did with Pulp Fiction, the non-linear timeline, wrapping in on itself in two distinct point of view scenarios - that was fucking genius. Sorry, but there weren't that many mainstream directors doing that stuff before QT. Plus, Tarantino's only directorial training came from watching - and loving - the movies. Too many people in Hollywood only love themselves, and can't pull their head out of their ass long enough to find something original to create, see Stephen Soderbergh.
Tarantino has also used his position in the media to champion all types of movies from the most obscure to the mainstream. I personally believe he has done a lot more for film than people give him credit for, including bringing to light some rare gems like Hero, Drunken Master and Switchblade Sisters. I think he should be applauded for his effort, vision and originality.
