I think he sort of has been fired. I suspect his "resignation" is really just CBS's nice way of letting him out withoug too much embarassment for him.

I figured his resignation stemmed from the story. I would have preferred to see him leave bornyos way. I never really cared that he had a political agenda and I always had respect for him as a journalist at least. Edward R. Murrow must be turning over in his grave.

Crappy Reporting Award of the year for Sure.
The man is just too old and an easy one got by him. I hope that after over 30 years of excellent work we will all be forgiven the one really stupid mistake we make at the end.

He should of been fired for sure and is he really retiring if he will continue to do 60 minutes or other side work on the network ( if still true). I like how these guys all want Rumsfeld's head on a platter because he is the head man , all responsibility lies with him and he knew everything that goes on but when it aplies to their own little messes they forget such rules. They are all useless anyway a large hooterewd woman with a pleasant voice would be my choice as anchorperson anyday

Isn't "Checking Your Sources" the Cardinal rule of journalism? Nothing got by him. He got excited and ran with the story because he thought he had something to get GW. I don't think he ever even admitted he did anything wrong. He can think about that when the IRS is doing a full audit on him for the next 4 years.

When the IRS starts auditing for years past that's when it gets expensive. If they want they can really put it to him. I keep seeing this funny image in my head. No not the one where I'm blowing Too Damned Ugly/Sick Fucks head off at point blank range with my 12 gauge but Dan Rather, Connie Chung, and Michael Moore all hanging out together and crying about what happened to their careers. "WHY WHY WHY!!!"

Yes, these people have no love for Rather, but you shouldn't fool yourself into thinking he has ever been a "journalist" or unbiased. Poke around www.ratherbiased.com and you will quickly see where his heart lies. Because of him and him alone CBS has been bitchslapped several times by the Whitehouse, beginning with Bush 41. I love reading what they call "texanisms" on that site, but other than that I wouldn't waste vomit on Dan Rather.

I especially liked how he refused to apoplogize AND stands by the story despite the fact the evidence to support it was made up. He basically said the story was true evan though the only facts to support it was bs. Dan was out to gun down Dubya one way or another. (dan)->

I read thru that site, You're right, I guess I am just disappointed. Even though he's a liberal I expected a higher level of journalistic integrity. Is journalistic integrity just an oxymoron these days?

of my college friends, the guy we always made fun of for being dumb is now on-air all the time on cnn. he was basically pretty attractive and could read teleprompters. they could replace most of these guys with computer-generated facsimiles of people pretty easily.
tv news is dead if you're able to make sense of a bunch of facts presented to you. all you gotta do is find reasonably accurate facts. the only exception you can find at a normal newsrack is the atlantic, it's a fucking great magazine and if i had a seal of approval it would get it. no pandering, no vital ties to academia resulting in politics and posturing, and it doesn't require tons of prior knowledge like the specialized rags.
