I think JRV has it right. When I actually read what website operators have said--about deliberately making it hard to cancel, about screwing over their customers as much as possible--and that they've written it down, discuss bulk emailing and "bulletproof hosting" so casually...

They're lucky it's only the FTC. They aren't toothless but some day someone is going to put together a spoke-and-wheel conspiracy case over their lunch hour. The Feds don't have to crack down on dubious obscenity charges. At least on the web, these guys break the law and openly state how they're going about it.
