I read a piece awhile ago about why "The Polar Express" hadn't been more successful, and it relates to the fact that the animation may be the most "realistic" to date, it stil isn't "real," and our brains distance us from such images. I haven't seen "The Polar Express," but I saw enough commercials, and I have to say, the characters may LOOK realistic, but there is something about them that just isn't right, and bothers me. Seeing those empty eyes, and vacant expressions... it's just disturbing.

Why Gollum was so readily loved and accepted isn't explained, but I think it's b/c Gollum is a character that really cannot exist outside of a computer. Watching a digital representation of Tom Hanks just isn't the same as watching him actually perform a role in person.




You're absolutely right with regard to the current state of the art, but you lack imagination if you think it will always remain that way. Compare "Polar Express" with "Toy Story". The technology is inevitably progressing towards genuine photo-realism and it's not going to be that long. It's really just a factor of processing power, and that's been increasing exponentially for the past 30 years.

It would of course require not just the technology, but also skillful artistry to make a realistic portrayal of human behaviour characteristics and avoid things like the vacant looking eyes you talk of. As the rendering technology itself become ubiquitous, this will probably become the mainstay of the animator's art - observing how people move, facial expressions, all the little quirks real people display and accurately reproducing them in digital characters. I don't see any reason why this will not be achieved.

Absolutely, as I said, the psychological satisfaction of knowing that girl really did that would not be there. Assuming that we know it's a digital creation.
