As far as Alaska goes, I watched this great documentary on PBS this weekend about some guy who moved, by himself, to Twin Lakes Alaska. He built himself a cabin, from the local resources he chopped down, and lived there by himself off the land for over 30 years. I've often thought Thoreau had the right idea.
