My local JC is offering classes in editing and video production. I'm thinking about taking them for fun, but I'm also curious as to what type of skills is the adult industry looking for in an individual to have on his person, in order to get involved with the business/production part of the industry. What classes would you advise one to take, in order for that person to be viewed as a skilled asset and not a liability in the industry.
If you want to be an editor, learn Final Cut Pro...most porn is being edited on it these days. Also, learning Photoshop and After Effects can't hurt (you'll use these for titles and effects).
Thank you Rodger. Part of the reason I'm interested in those classe is that I have a MAC already and wanted to learn how use it to it's full advantage in those areas.
BTW what's the average pay scale for editors Monthly/Yearly in this buisness?

I was a freelancer for 3 years and got paid by the job, not as a salary. Pay depends on what companies you work for...for example Hustler paid me $1,200 to edit a feature (hard and soft versions) but I only got $800-$1000 to edit for Smash...plus bigger features like something for Michael Raven will pay better because there's a lot more involved than cutting a gonzo.

Out of curiosity, how long does it take to edit a, let's say, typical gonzo film. Can it be done in a few days?

A higher-end gonzo movie (like something from Hustler) takes about 3-4 days of editing to do both hard and soft versions, but a lot of the time they shoot 2 cameras or have a lot more coverage to go through than just a guy with a camera in a room. Something smaller like that can take 1-2 days total to edit.
Rodger, Kami, and everybody else thankyou for you responses they have been very helpful.
Besides, the aformentioned, editing and production classes are there any other classes I should take, to learn more of the buisness aspect of your industry?
Quote: Nice...you should upgrade to OSX...DVD Studio Pro 3 is amazing...so is FCP 4.5.
what I failed to mention is Im still in my learning phase, if I change one part of the process now Im doomed! plus the mac i have (im a IBM girl) can only handle so much its just a workhorse left over from when the editing group i work with upgraded.

It couldn't hurt to take a basic video production class...like a Camera 101 class just to understand how a camera works. That way if someone needs a shooter you can step in. That's what happened to me...
