throw in 800,000 dead in the mid-90's in rwanda if you need something more current. not that it absolves enabling and funding genocide, but nobody makes luxury goods and booze like them.

I don't see how the Rwandan Genocide can be entirely blamed on colonial history. The Hutu v Tutsi tribal rivalry pre-dates colonization, although the colonial government did make the situation worse. I have to say we can't blame the French. Especially since it wasn't them, but the Germans and then the Belgians who colonized it...
Algeria was one of the bloodiest colonial wars ever, and an incredible anachronism. France was still trying to hold on to it's empire, and willing to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of lives to do it, at a point in time when most of the developed world had grasped the concept of self-determination.
By the way, Melissa I'm not actually on an anti-French trip here. I just couldn't stand by while you try to claim the moral high ground for France, when history speaks otherwise. Surely getting rid of a tyrannical dictator like Saddam Hussein, with the clearly stated intention of eventually withdrawing and allowing the people of Iraq to govern themselves democratically, is a better reason to fight a war than denying a country it's independence?

Democracy is the icing on the money cake. No country has or will ever be run on the morality of the suburban philosopher or intellectual.
France is a heavy offender in a lot of ways and covers it up with criticism and misguided morality screamed at the top of it's politicians lungs.
Old Iraq is gone not due to the need for democracy but for the need of resources. All good, I'm for Roman conquest and power strategy but I always find the Democratic sugarcoating difficult to swallow.

i'd call funding, training, and arming the bad guys then letting them slip unchallenged though your army and across the border is more than bad form. the fact that it was widely reported some of them did so in french jeeps and continue to walk around in public is enough for me. google it if you want to get depressed.

Of course the democracy aspect was an afterthought - the simple consequence of ousting a dictator and needing to replace him with something, rather than the motivation for the war. We could debate what Bush's real reasons for getting rid of Saddam were, but my point was simply that whatever the motivation, getting rid of Saddam and replacing him with a democracy must surely be a good thing. Whether it was worth a war, and the associated loss of life is debatable.
