I'll go a step further: What is the legal basis for the President's action? Take a look at the Constitution, which requires a Congressional declaration of war, and the War Powers Act for your reference.

Assad is bad. I'll grant you that. I think whoever follows Assad will be many factors worse, and prefer not to hasten his exit as a result.
