1. It takes two to tango both sides have responsibility in this. Castro used fighting the evil of Batista as justification for his own evil. Lenin used fighting the evil of the Tzars as justification for his own evil. Arafat used fighting the evil of Israel as justification for his own evil. Mugambe used the past racist and segregationist policies of the Rhodesian government as justification for an agricultural policy that led his entire country to famine. Hitler himself used what he saw as the evil (as in the harshness and severeness) of the Treaty of Versailles as justification for his evils. History is rife with one side using fighting the evil of another side as justification of their own evils. Being the lesser of two evils is still evil and should not be glorified. Antifa has a history of using violence and intimidation as tactics against not only Nazis but anyone else who does not agree with their tactics or their points of view. Totalitarianism is always evil no matter how noble the intent. The end result is always oppression no matter what the original goal was. And believing in this does not make one a Nazi sympathizer (I will make this point clearer in thought #3.)

2. If we are fighting Nazis here why are we tearing down statues of historical figures who died half a century before Nazism was even born? Why are we focusing on tearing down Robert E. Lee when I haven't heard one report of any statue of Charles Lindbergh being touched?

I don't like the tearing down of any statues of historical figures. This is what ISIS does. This is what the totalitarianist state in 1984 did. This is not what Americans should be doing. One day it is a statue, how long before it is a history book? Also once an entity gets the power to draw a line between what is acceptable/offensive and what is not acceptable/offensive that entity never stops drawing lines. It may start out with the most reprehensible ideology in the world but the next day it becomes the next most reprehensible ideology in the world. The day after that it becomes the third most reprehensible ideology in the world. It eventually moves at glacier speed so that ten years from now the 3642nd most reprehensible ideology in the world is taboo.

3. This whole situation was handled terribly wrong. A little calmness, ingenuity, and subtleness would have ended in a much more preferable outcome. How I would have handled this situation.

1. Tell Antifa to pound sand, one batch of idiots is enough for authorities to keep an eye on.

2. Get the Nazis to their permit spot and then do...nothing. Ignore them completely. Let them have their little rally. Let them spend all afternoon in the August Virginia sun. Then when the rally is all over...

3. We are in the South and Southern hospitality is legendary. I see no reason to change this tradition. After the Nazis are all hot, sweaty, and stinky offer to round them up in the backs of trucks and take them to the nearest showerhouse.

A resident clearly described an invading, violent mob of Nazis, at one point marching into a black neighborhood attempting home invasions. They were repelled by residents. Clergy would not have gotten out safely without the intervention of Antifa. There was no permit for Friday night. Many more cops were needed, and cops with some balls. And the groups should have been separate.

Antifa would fade away if cops did the job. If they can break out tanks and stuff in Ferguson, they can contain these Nazis.

Anyways, the problem with constitutional literalists or original intentists is that they really tend to have no idea what this actually would mean. Right wingers tend to think they have some kind of exclusive access to the constitution.

I'm one of the few far leftists here who is generally against gun control but if you interpret the original intent of the right to bare arms, the public is supppsed to have access to the same weapons the military has. There is nowhere that I'm aware of in the constitution that declares what type of economic system we are required to have. Now I suppose you can make the argument that free markets and capitalism (I would say capitalism and free markets aren't even by definition the same thing but that's for another time) are intrinsically linked to representative democracy but you could also make lots of arguments against it. If anything that way most law makers manipulate the commerce clause it's has pretty much taken off the flood gates as far as any level of state manipulation into the markets.


Should the south have been allowed to leave the union? Totally. There is no argument against this. The very nature of the design of our nation was to be a very weak federal government. This doesn't mean the south didn't suck and their entire way of life wasn't based on the grotesque subjugating of other human beings but they had every right to leave. I've stated many times that if any states which to leave today they should be alllowed to take a hike. It's laughable because most red states can't take care of themselves so have at it.


Now here is where things get really uncomfortable:

The constitution, or just our founding fathers in general, made it very clear that the idea of the United States was that if the state stops serving the people it's is the DUTY of the people to overthrow the government. It is literally built into the frame work.

Now. Who is to say at this point who is right or wrong if they wish to overthrow the state at that point? And who is to be considered the traitor? Who is to be considered the patriot?

There is more justifications for a "well regulated militia " in the constitution than for the military.

So again, we have uncomfortable questions arising from that. What defines a militia?

What if antifa declare themselves the patriotic militia that wishes to over throw the state because the state is no longer serving the needs of the people?


These are the brutality nasty problems that tend to crop up when you start to actually look at the constitution. The constitution isn't the end all be all perfect document that was shat out of gods rectum into the hands prophets. It's a document that was written by men that have the same flaws and imperfections as any that live today.
