Yeah BDM is right on this. You have to remember back in the late 1770s the U.S. consisted of New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, and the boondocks. Founding fathers figured out that if you used popular vote to determine President the boondocks would have no say in the government. The only places candidates would campaign in would be Boston, Philadelphia, and New York. The electoral college was created to balance the scales to a degree. This year Hillary won the popular vote by two million but if you look at the results by land area in the form of counties Trump won 83% of the area. If you just let the big population centers control how the country is run everyone in the country will end up moving to those population centers and you would have massive overcrowding in 5% of the country while the remaining 95% would look like U.S. 56 between I-25 and Dodge City, Kansas.
