If you look at the results in the swing states, the difference this year was with the Independents, which seem to make up around 20% of the voters. The rest is split almost 50/50 between the Democrats/Republicans with maybe a point or two advantage for the Democrats in some states. 90% of Dems/Repubs voted for their respective candidates in every state, with Independents breaking for Trump by 8-10% over Clinton in the states where Trump won.
The remarkable thing is that Trump got something like 35% of the hispanic vote, pretty much the same as or better than Romney did in 2012. I also enjoy that the working class now identifies itself more with Trump than it does with Bruce Springsteen.
