I think that Liston was made to throw both fights by his friends in the mob, first time he stayed on the stool to avoid the humiliation of pretending to be knocked out.

The second fight he threw it so nakedly I'm surprised anyone believes the 'phantom punch' nonsense. Ali could bang but he was a volume, wear-you-down puncher, he rarely took anyone out with one punch and there's no way that glancing blow did it to Liston.

The famous photo of Clay/Ali yelling at th 'fallen' Liston is clearly because he could tell that Liston was throwing the fight.
