Doing anything with the common cold would not make sense. It's a money machine.
The USSR worked almost exclusively on smallpox strains for use in biological weapons. Germany was working on retroviruses before that and before them ultimately the US had a program starting from late 1887 called “Laboratory of Hygiene†run by Dr. Joseph J. Kinyoun. In 1889 they were able to identify microplasmas; that's all they needed for a start.
Then why hasn't one of your communist countries found the cure for the common cold?
Surely money means nothing to them when the greater good is at stake. Think of the increased productivity for the state. How could they justify not doing so?
