Not about a purchase, but I thought this was interesting/ridiculous. I'm a fan of fancy chef knives and a while back, I put my name/email into the system for a chance to have a knife made by a guy named Bob Kramer, who is considered to be the best knife maker in the world.
I have probably a better chance of winning the lottery than being selected to have him make a knife for me, but it didn't really cost anything (I believe they ran my credit card for a few bucks to make sure I wasn't just wasting their time with a bogus account). If you're lucky enough to be chosen, you get to pick out a knife style, size, steel, pattern, etc. and have a custom knife made for the cost of a few hundred dollars per inch.
Anyway, being registered on their website means that I get an email a few times a year when Bob Kramer decides to auction off a knife. I got a notification today about an auction and took a peek. The knife below, a 10" Japanese style gyuto, sold for..... $58,400. It's made from steel that came from a meteorite. I did not bid on the knife. Unless I win his website lottery and get selected for a custom knife, I'll stick with my $350 10" Kramer replica from Sur La Table.
