You can chose your friends, but not your relatives. How many relatives would you choose as friends if they were not related to you? That has been the fodder for many plays, movies and TV shows over the centuries, the family gathering for some event (birthday, holiday) and all hell breaks loose. It definitely happens a lot less often when only friends gather together.

Dana must be jones-ing for some psychotropic drugs to control all the feelings coursing through her. Her mother died from whom she was estranged. She struggles to survive in a mostly illegal (and not very lucrative for her) profession.

She tries to go about 2500 miles (~4100 km for our friends up North) to fight a losing fight for financial remuneration from the mother's estate and her unreliable transportation shows itself to be unreliable in inclement weather. To put a cherry on top of this massive shit cake, she gets ripped off by Iowa's version of Goober trying to get the old Toyota back on the trail again.

The battle of the sisters is brewing and I wouldn't be surprised if the sister tries to have Dana arrested for trespassing and other petty nonsense. So: 1) she will get no money from the estate, 2) she missed the funeral by a week or so 3) she blew through a lot of cash and time to get to Canada for no reason. Logic and reason isn't her strong suit. I'll bet sleeping in the car in Canada in April isn't quite the same experience as doing it in Southern California.
