US citizens residing outside the United States pay taxes to the country in which they reside, and then write out a check to the Federal gummint on top of that. And, if like me, you're a member of a California-based partnership, the State of Crazyfornia grabs an additional ~10% of your income just because they want to. I pay close to 40 percent of my income in tax because of that.

The United States is the only OECD country which taxes its citizens on worldwide income. I work with Brits, Aussies, Germans, Singaporeans and they all laugh it up when I describe how I have to pay taxes to the US on top of the taxes which are sufficient to meet my obligations to the country in which I reside.
