Which means Gawker and company go out of business (probably not) or Nick Denton has to sell practically everything to raise the money. Apparently under Florida law, they will have to post a bond or actual cash covering the judgment value to appeal the decision. If Hulk was smart he would negotiate it down to $20-40MM and stop the appeal. There is a good chance another jury will give him a lot less or nothing at all.
I'll bet Nick Denton can do the equivalent of pawn shop loan using Gawker assets with some Wall Street firm to get the money or the bond necessary to appeal.
They have to post a percentage of the judgement, not the whole thing. I did some research and it looks like they would have to put up about 40 million.
It is likely they would get the award reduced significantly. However, having to part with 40 million dollars for 2 years while the appeals process happens is a really difficult thing.
So, they negotiate something with Hogan or go bankrupt. That probably is the choice at this point. They don't seem big enough to want to part with 40 million for 2 years
