The US also has three reactors that have never malfunctioned. Anyway, the "advanced" technology these days is the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor which I think is a South African design.

I do agree that there is too much misguided criticism of Brazil in this situation. I suspect that real problem with American performers working Brazil is language: how is Darren going to read the test result a Brazilian girl hands him? And how can he talk to the people at the clinic to verify the test result, even if he trusts the clinic?
