My dryer was acting like a shit and not drying clothes all the way on the auto sensing cycle and leaving shit damp and requiring additional cycles to dry. This prompted me to do some maintenance to track down the problem and the problem was excessive lint build up in the dryer's lint trap housing, blower fan and housing and the exhaust ducts. What I also found scared the shit out of me. The accumulation of lint and dust in the dryer units cabinet near the heating assembly had been burning. There was a lot of it. I'm damn lucky I didn't have a house fire.
I'm tearing all the appliances in the house apart this weekend to clean out dust and dog hair from motors, electrical parts. ventilation holes and coils. I'm also going to include the hot water heater as well as drain the sediment out of the tank.
After cleaning out the dryer I removed almost 5 pounds of lint from the unit and exhaust ducts. The dryer hasn't worked so well in years.
