From what I understand, Ole is mostly work. I've heard plenty of stories about how, at the conventions and fancons and shit, Ole will often hang out in the hotel lobby and make himself available to shoot the shit on a near consistent basis. He kind of does the Don Rickles thing. Some guy on another forum was saying that Ole would basically rip anyone without an intelligent standpoint to shreds, and engage those who were more thoughtful in their approaches. This guy had the opportunity to sit down and have dinner with Ole and a few other during the "legends dinner" thing, and he said that Ole was a kind, polite, class act at the dinner table.

Also, his booking was notoriously shitty. But that's what attracts me to the spectacle. Bad booking makes for damn entertaining TV. The Black Scorpion and The Shock Master were both Ole angles that kept me coming back for more.

I think Shockmaster he tries to pawn off on Herd. Scorpion, he says he had no clue, but the suits liked the idea, and he was making shit up on the fly.

By that time, yeah, Ole was probably out of his depth. It is the 70s/80s when he was booking BOTH Charlotte and Georgia where his stellar work was done. Granted, when you look at the talent he had to work with, it was tremendous.

Interesting note: Ole was trained by Verne Gagne. Verne told him never to go to Tennessee or Pensecola (Fullers).

Failure is a bastard. Black Scorpion was like that angle Vern did in the final AWA days when he'd come out and say the "big announcement" wasn't ready this week, but next week for sure. When the BC was unmasked as Natch, it was really anti- climactic because it was so obvious they were booking it on the fly and had zero idea where they wanted it to end.

Also, I had the pleasure of attending Starcade '90 and seeing the Black Scorpion reveal at the tender age of 11. I specifically remember a bunch of drunk St. Louis hoosiers yelling "STING!! VENICE BEACH! 1986!!" and all the other Scorpion tag lines.

I also attended an NWA house show in 1986 where they held a tournament for the Central States Title, that was won by Sam Houston (what the fuck happened to that guy anyway?) when Bill Dundee's dirty cheating caught up with him in the finals and the belt was awarded to Houston via DQ. After this match they had a Bunkhouse Stampede (street-clothes battle royal with weapons) where Dusty Rhodes won a boot full of cash. Fuck, that was an awesome night of wrasslin for an eight year old.

Sam houston. Didnt he marry Baby Doll so Dusty de pushed him and he had a cup of coffee in WWF? I could be all over the place with that.

I think we're fixin to lose Dutch Savage. A real staple in the Portland promotion. Tough in that Arn Anderson way. Very little yelling, just simple quiet very believable "here's what's going to happen Thursday night in Hermiston". Went into real estate. By all accounts just a good all around guy. Stroke, really bad but suddenly moved into physical rehsb. So things are looking up. For about 2 days. ICU and nothing is working. Dust in the wind and all that.

Another thing that I discovered that night was that the black folk really liked Ric Flair. I mean really liked him. I hated Ric as a kid because even though my dad used slow motion and long afternoon lectures to educate me to the contrary, I still bought into kayfabe and hated Flair for his cheating. I remember not understanding the love for him live, and wondering why it was only black folk that cheered him.

After the show, we waited outside to see the wrasslers depart, and I tried to get an autograph from the rock and roll express and they totally blew me off. My dad called them assholes as they jumped in a cab.
