.22 would require a headshot to be sure of death. Coyotes are tough and you couldn't count on infection getting them unless you gushot 'em through the intestines.

I've seen coyotes walking the streets of Beverly Hills at night in the winter as they come out of the hills looking for food. They look like large dogs except for their jaws look more elongated.
