I'm pretty easy on that point: I consider any US citizen to be an American. Immigrate lawfully and take that oath, you're an American. Get born on US soil by accident, you're an American. Race is not an issue to me — citizenship is. And that is a legal construct. This should not be a surprise, as I am a lawyer and presumably lawyers are interested in and supportive of the rule of law.
