Because of construction that was going on, some geniuses a few year's back moved a midnight mountain bike race from where it's usually held to different set of trails that are right near a creek during peak salmon season. Some woman came zooming around a corner and I believe she plowed right into a bear's hind end and it seriously mauled her. There have been several other maulings on those same trails. They tell you not to run when you see a bear because it provokes their instinct to chase you. Then again, the one person who I read about getting away was a high school track runner who went into a full sprint.
There are bears all around Anchorage, but they do their best to hide from you during the day. I've posted about this one before, but this beast got into a utility company's electrical box and electrocuted itself a while back right next to a paved bike trail that I used to ride on every day.
