Let's say the Koch Brothers are worth US$100 billion, which, as it is reported, they are. The United States economy is US$17 trillion, which is 170 times a hundred billion. But the Kochs' US$100 billion represents their family's accumulated wealth over nearly a century, a century in which said family invented and perfected the very industrial practice upon which the wealth of quite literally the entire world is based (petroleum cracking). Gasoline, and the transportation revolution it engendered, has allowed billions more people to live on this Earth. We should compare their US$100 billion to cumulative world — or at the very least, US — GDP since 1927 when Fred Koch improved the extraction of gasoline from heavy oil. What fraction of GDP since 1927 do you suppose those dastardly Kochs have stolen from us?
